English Version
August is almost over, a month I had imagined would be much quieter. I thought it would be one of those months with plenty of work, yes, but nothing out of the ordinary. It turned out to be completely different.
At the hospital, we have once again had to learn how to work with what we have. The shortage of supplies and certain types of anesthesia has forced us to look for alternatives, and one of them has been performing some surgeries under local anesthesia. It is not an option for every type of procedure or every patient, but for selected adolescent patients, it can be a useful alternative.
And although it does not solve every problem, at least it allows us to keep moving forward. Every patient we manage to remove from the waiting list is a small victory. In moments like these, you learn that sometimes practicing medicine also means adapting, improvising, and finding a door when it seems like every door is closed.
During these months, my friend and colleague Yessika has also been a fundamental support. With my usual colleague away, who will soon be returning from his vacation in Mexico, we have had to take on many things together. And I have to say, we have worked very well as a team.
Little by little, we have been solving problems, getting the work done, and surviving those days when you feel like the hospital has decided to test your patience.
But, in between everything, we have also found time to laugh. Because when you spend so many hours working with someone, you end up sharing much more than patients and worries. Yessika has made these months much easier and, above all, much more fun.
And of course, not everything can be about work.
There has been no shortage of the occasional frappuccino to remind us that we are still human beings. Well... occasional might be an elegant way of saying one... or two. Because after a difficult day, there are some little things you simply need.
And yesterday, Friday, I got to enjoy one of those little moments that had nothing to do with work and yet made me incredibly happy.
I finally got to do something I had been wanting to do for a long time: watch Howl's Moving Castle, by Hayao Miyazaki.
There are movies you watch simply for entertainment, and then there are movies that somehow seem to find you at exactly the right moment. Howl's Moving Castle is one of those stories that reminds you that life can be strange, chaotic, and even a little absurd, but also incredibly beautiful.
And perhaps that is a pretty good summary of my August.
