¡vamos a disfrutarla!

English versión

Over time — or rather, as we grow and mature — we develop our character, take on responsibilities and shape our tastes. However, amidst this whole process, there is an invisible factor at work: the suppression or denial of our own desires.

It is said that we are all free, but we accept that our freedom ends where another’s begins. Thus, without anyone needing to judge us with critical verbiage, we adopt self-censorship of our own accord, driven by the fear of expressing ourselves and of ‘what people might say’.

This paradoxical freedom translates into obligations set down on paper. They seem to form a book of 2,599 pages, filled with clauses on both sides. We dislike many of them, but—surprise!—when we look for the author, we discover our own name signing the epilogue: a tribute to everything we long for yet end up putting off.

In this book made of recycled paper—which we seem to inherit even without any blood ties—we find passages so identical to our own story that it’s frightening. Yet we grow complacent and fall into the crude trap of judgement: ‘If it had been me, I would have done things differently.’ It’s curious how we put things off in exactly the same way, yet it always seems ‘healthier’ to criticise other people’s lives than to look at our own, doesn’t it?

Amongst this list of sacrifices, the most common — and I’d go so far as to say the one that would receive the most votes if we were to conduct a proper survey — is that of rest. Holidays tend to be that turning point influenced by three key factors: money, actual time and work commitments.

A lack of financial resources is usually the first trigger for putting off a well-deserved break. It is precisely there that we fall into the trap of work commitments almost by default: on the premise that we won’t be going anywhere, we decide to take on overtime and generate extra income. It is at that crossroads that we get stuck and lose our free time.

We put off taking a physical and mental break due to a lack of funds, falling into an illogical cycle from which we end up trapped: working no longer to live life, but merely to ensure our survival.

But it is not just in our work routine that we put things off; this sense of resignation seeps into far more intimate areas of our lives, and this is where almost all of us end up in the same boat.

In our emotional lives, compromises often begin subtly: we give in to our partner on seemingly trivial matters, such as choosing a film or the weekend menu. However, when that dynamic escalates to the point of altering our external and internal selves, we discover with sadness that we have denied our own essence by allowing ourselves to be moulded to suit our loved one.

Once that ‘model’ of ourselves has been perfected in the eyes of the other person, the realisation is bitter: we understand that it was we ourselves who nullified our own existence by remaining silent, by failing to defend our point of view or demand the respect we deserve. The alarming thing is that the problem rarely stops there; it often extends and seeps into parenting once children arrive.

Thus, children grow up observing an environment where one person holds the reins and the other submits and remains silent. Unintentionally, we end up instilling in minds that are only just forming their character the idea that putting oneself last, negating one’s own needs and silencing one’s own preferences are the essential requirements for ‘harmonious coexistence’.

Denying oneself with a false sense of duty

I was one of those who fell into the trap of denying myself a proper rest. I would agree to requests from colleagues to swap shifts and even ended up working during my own holidays. Under the pretext of being single and childless, I felt a moral obligation to ‘help’. It was a burden I placed on myself, which, far from resulting in genuine gratitude, ended up becoming a dead end.

The thing is, when you finally learn to say ‘no’ to protect your time and your health, you become the villain of the story in a matter of seconds; that’s when everyone forgets the favours you’ve done. In the end, in the eyes of others, we’ll always be the villains in someone’s story. The real problem lies in when we ourselves believe the narrative and take on that guilt as our own.

Don’t deny yourself what you enjoy: watch the film you fancy, eat whatever you fancy, and don’t deny yourself that perfume, those clothes or whatever else you feel like having at that moment.

You only live once… let’s enjoy it!
