English version

Angélica, guilty before the mirror

How much longer will you put up with it? I look at myself in the mirror with those unflinching eyes and that triumphant smirk that only someone who has sinned would recognise. You’re a real little minx! With that angelic face that hides your horns and tail out of sight.

Yet guilt is that curse that gnaws at your insides. A pain that sometimes causes anguish and at other times does nothing at all, as if we were immune… Isn’t that right, Angélica?

Don’t play innocent with me. We know full well that you’re lying, and if you’re not careful, you’ll be found out. That sin you’ve committed may not be ‘that serious’, but, at the end of the day, you’ve lied. And lying, my dear, is the sin that breeds mistrust.

And even if you keep scrubbing and scrubbing that T-shirt to remove the stain, that mischievous stain is the one that has remained on your soul. Because when you discover that you can lie without showing the slightest sign of remorse, you carry on and on. I can see it in your eyes: the satisfaction of the act, that terrible act.

Besides, you ought to hurry. He’ll be here soon. If he catches you out, it’s all over; you know there’ll be a backlash that will hurt for days, weeks, and who knows, perhaps even years. You never know how another person will react to such a terrible betrayal. Carve on. Put on some perfume, mask the scent, hide everything. And before you leave this room where you wash away your guilt, look at your face and wipe away the trace of sin: a hint of that black treasure is still visible—sweet, bittersweet and sometimes white—but it’s certainly enchanting, isn’t it?

Meanwhile, no one will take away your joyful smile. And the thing is, even though the sin was merely eating a piece of chocolate, this chocolate represented the trust placed in you with the words: ‘I’ll be back soon, don’t eat it without me.’ And so, you mischievous sweet-toothed one, what lie will you tell? What will be your excuse when faced with the empty packet? There it is… Did you hear the cat? The poor fat cat doesn’t speak; he won’t be able to defend himself. His weight and notorious gluttony make him the perfect scapegoat. You’ve found your scapegoat; you’re Machiavellian in your cunning, whilst the chocolate, once a treasure, dissolves in your stomach after having been savoured.

You run your tongue over the inside of your mouth, searching for more of that forbidden sweetness. Treacherous, that’s what you are; gluttony has taken hold of you, causing you to forget the one you love, the one you promised to wait for to share this delight. But that treasure, forbidden at first, ended up corrupting your sanity. You gently ran your fingers over it, seeking to savour its aroma and appease your ravenous appetite, and suddenly your fingers were peeling away the wrapper, revealing the golden paper that screamed ‘forbidden’. And yet, despite that, you carried on; you pressed ahead, embracing the guilt.

Is it a sin? It hasn’t been… I know it hasn’t been; it couldn’t be, could it? Repeat it until you believe it, until you’re convinced, because deep down you know that guilt won’t go away. Sooner or later… hasten your pace and keep carving, because the judge is coming.
