While it might sound a bit frightening, there is actually no risk to human life, as the aircraft is controlled entirely by algorithms and sensors. Autopilot and self-flying systems are not the same thing. Autopilot functions like a car's cruise control, assisting the pilot with only specific tasks. In contrast, autonomous technology handles everything—from takeoff and landing to mid-air course corrections—without any human intervention. The adoption of self-flying technology in aviation has been slower than in the automotive sector, largely due to stringent airspace safety regulations and the catastrophic consequences of potential accidents.
However, interest and funding from the military sector are accelerating the development of this technology. It has already demonstrated remarkable success in tasks such as aerial crop spraying and transporting cargo to remote areas. Companies like California-based Pyka and Britain's Windracers are building these specialized drones or aircraft from scratch. They are already in operation over cotton and soybean fields in Brazil and within Ukrainian airspace. Meanwhile, companies like Reliable Robotics and Merlin Labs are experimenting with integrating these autonomous systems into existing large aircraft, such as Cessnas and C-130s.
Pilot associations, however, have raised significant concerns regarding safety. Perfect solutions have yet to be developed for "detect and avoid" capabilities—identifying other aircraft or obstacles in the sky—and for maintaining real-time communication with air traffic control. A single misstep could lead to a disastrous accident. Some are utilizing AI-powered cameras, while others are employing radar technology for this purpose. Can these autonomous aircraft actually be adapted for passenger services?

According to experts, the introduction of fully pilotless aircraft for general passenger air travel remains a somewhat distant prospect. However, this technology currently being deployed in specific sectors like agriculture and cargo transport will eventually make conventional commercial aviation safer and more efficient.
