Musical Tribute to the Musicians Lost in the Twin Earthquakes

After a month-long halt to our musical lives due to the earthquakes that shook Venezuela, a group of us musicians finally gathered voluntarily during the last week of July to rehearse and prepare selections from Mozart’s Requiem. We performed the piece at a memorial mass honoring the musicians from our institution who had lost their lives or been left destitute by the tragedy. As I have mentioned in previous posts, those of us living in Caracas lost only material possessions, whereas our colleagues in La Guaira lost their lives, their families, or their homes. It took this unexpected reunion for us to fully grasp the scale of the loss—over 150 singers and instrumentalists had perished—making this tribute to their families and the staff of the La Guaira Sistema essential.
>Luego de un mes de haber paralizado nuestras vidas musicales por los terremotos que sacudieron a Venezuela, finalmente algunos músicos nos reunimos voluntariamente la última semana de Julio para ensayar y preparar algunos números del Réquiem de Mozart e interpretarlo en una misa tributo a los músicos de nuestra institución que murieron o quedaron damnificados en la tragedia. Como les dije en otros posts, los músicos que vivimos en Caracas solo perdimos cosas materiales, pero nuestros colegas de La Guaira perdieron la vida, su familias o sus casas, y tuvo que llegar este inesperado reencuentro para conocer la magnitud de los cantantes e instrumentistas que murieron, los cuales fueron más de 150, así que este homenaje a sus familias y los trabajadores del Sistema La Guaira era necesario.
This musical mass took place at the Don Bosco Church in Altamira, here in Caracas, and was presided over by the Archbishop of Caracas. In addition to the local congregation, a large number of fellow musicians attended, so the venue was filled with colleagues. Although I am Catholic and generally attend or sing at mass, I have never understood why the chorus of the Venezuelan National Anthem is often performed during the Consecration; in fact, I didn't think we would do it that day. However, as you can see at the beginning of the video I’ve shared above in 3Speak format, the anthem was performed by both the orchestra and the choir—and I emphasize this because it was a moment that deeply moved me.
>Esta misa musical se llevó a cabo en la Iglesia Don Bosco de Altamira, aquí en Caracas y fue presidida por el Arzobispo de Caracas. Además de la comunidad, se acercó gran cantidad de colegas músicos, así que el lugar estaba lleno de colegas. Aunque soy católico y generalmente asisto o canto en misa, nunca he sabido por qué en el momento de la consagración se suele interpretar el coro del Himno Nacional de Venezuela, y de hecho, ese día no pensé que lo fuéramos a hacer, pero como pueden apreciar al inicio del video que les comparto arriba en formato 3Speak, el himno se interpretó tanto con la orquesta como con el coro, y hago énfasis en esto porque fue un momento que me estremeció por completo.
It is one thing to sing a Mozart funeral mass, and quite another to sing for Venezuela amidst the chaos; the worst part is that I have had to do it several times now, and I always feel the same way. My country—and almost everything happening here—causes me deep pain, and I long for the moment I can sing the beautiful, powerful Gloria al Bravo Pueblo just as I imagine it in my dreams: joyful, at peace... and free 🙏

This post features few photos because I took the Mass, the music, and my colleagues' emotions very seriously; although we were there as volunteers, we have all been affected in some way by the earthquakes that occurred just a month ago. If you follow me here on Hive, you’ll know I took plenty of photos of this imposing Catholic church, but I’ll share them in a future post. It was hard for me to agree to this activity, but now that it’s done, I have no regrets; deep down, we needed to sing and play, and the music touched many people there. I could sense it from my spot on the choir platform—we sang above the altar, which is the designated space for singers in this church. Also, August is usually our vacation time, so this final gathering was nice, despite the pain and the fact that a full week had passed without us fully processing the terrible experience with our friends. Each story is more painful and shocking than the last—it’s truly striking... I’ll sign off by thanking everyone who reads and supports my work; have a wonderful week! ❤️
>Este post tiene pocas fotografías porque me tomé con mucha seriedad la misa, la música y los sentimientos de mis compañeros de trabajo, y es que aunque estábamos ahí por voluntariado, todos estamos afectados de algún modo por los terremotos que a penas tienen un mes desde que ocurrieron. Igual si me sigues aquí en Hive sabrás que tomé muchas fotos de esta imponente iglesia católica, pero las compartiré en una futura publicación. Me costó mucho decir que sí a esta actividad, pero ahora que ya está hecho no me arrepiento, en el fondo necesitábamos cantar y tocar, y la música tocó a muchas personas en ese lugar, yo lo notaba desde mi lugar en la tarima del coro, ya que cantamos sobre el altar, que es el espacio que tiene esta iglesia para los cantantes; por otro lado, Agosto siempre ha sido nuestra temporada vacacional, así que fue agradable este último encuentro, a pesar del dolor y a pesar de que pasó una semana completa y aún no terminábamos de desahogarnos con nuestros amigos de la terrible experiencia. Cada historia duele y sorprende más que otra, es impresionante... Me despido agradeciendo a todos los que leen y apoyan, que tengan una feliz semana ❤️
