Faith, Health, Family & The Fortune

Story time from Jongo....
I spent almost every summer of my childhood in Newfoundland, Canada. Even though I lived in Toronto, my parents would send me to my grandparents home for the summer.
I'm sure they did it out of love, but let's be honest...They were working and needed some time to themselves. So my grandparents home became my destination for my summers.
I loved it. It was something I will cherish forever. Spending time with them, and the camping trips we used to have. I'm forever grateful for them and to God for allowing me to be part of the family I have.
One of my strongest memories of a summer trip to my grandparents was an early evening dinner. Obviously this was decades ago, so I don't have the entire conversation memorized, but the topic came up about....Neighbours who were wealthy.
They lived around the corner from my grand parents, and always had the flashiest new boats, cars and over the top 'cabin in the woods'. My grand parents were what you would call on the 'poor' side, but always seemed to have enough.
They had food on the table, a roof over their heads and their faith.
Being the youngest grandkid, I used to question why the neighbours had so much and (I thought) we had so little...
My grand mother's words will be etched in my mind forever...
"If you have your health, you have all the wealth!"
Those words have stayed with me forever. Because not soon after my 'q&a' sessions about the wealthy neighbours, we started to see their family being affected with health problems.
And then the inevitable happened, those same neighbours started to pass away. And it wasn't a quick death either, it was long, and full of pain and suffering.
The words of my grandmother started to play in my ears again and again...All the money in the world is useless, if you don't have your health.
As I'm approaching my 50th year on God's green earth, these memories that I have from my childhood seem to be playing in my head over and over.
Words from my grandmother that I sometimes forget because of the world we live in....Take for example tonight at dinner with my family.
The roles were kind of reversed because my son started to bring up 'the neighbours' in a way, and asking questions about why some people have billions of dollars and others have so little....
I started to answer him with the words that my grandmother told me decades ago...And I'll paraphrase it now:
Me: "Son, you have your health. And that makes you one of the richest people on the planet!"
Son: "I don't understand...."
Me: "Take a look at the wealth you have right in front of you. You have your health, some 'rich' people would trade all their money for something you take for granted!"
Son: "Oh I think I get it!"
Me: "Not only that, ;et's look at the fact we are sitting in our own home. We have a roof over our head and your plate is filled with food...Kid, we are the richest family around!"
I share this story, not only as an experience that happened tonight at my home, but for a reminder....For anyone reading this, but also for myself...
God is good!
He provides and makes sure we are always taken care of (Matthew 6 for context). I know I've mentioned this before, but I have to practice the attitude of gratitude much more in my life. Some of us may not have the deep pockets, but when you start to take inventory of the blessings that we do have...I think we can agree, we are truly blessed!
Faith, health and family truly are the Fortune!
