MicroFiction: A 250 word story format that I often utilize to address the daily prompts. The story today is written using the word prompt "your loss".

...When someone informs you of a devastating event by categorizing it as "your loss", you're tempted to feel as though the situation was entirely your fault as to the unfavorable outcome. I share a story with you along those lines. I hope you enjoy.

For my theme, I was inspired by and utilized the @daily.prompt's publishing of [1 September 2026, Freewriters Community Daily Writing Prompt Day 3213: your loss](https://peakd.com/hive-161155/@daily.prompt/1-september-2026-freewriters-community-daily-writing-prompt-day-3213-your-loss).

Below is my story:

The engine of the moving truck idled in front of Katrina's brownstone. From the second story, she stood in the center of her empty living room.

Staring at the clean pattern of flooring where the dining table previously sat, a sudden stab in her chest brought fresh pangs.

On the counter lay Vincent's house key, placed neatly beside a sticky note that simply read: Unfortunate. But Your Loss.

The words cut like a serrated knife, slow and deliberate as she painfully recalled their final meeting the night before.

"You agreed to an open relationship. Not my fault you couldn't handle it," Vincent sneered.

Suddenly, the phone buzzed. A welcome interruption.

Katrina picked up on the first ring, her throat tight, fighting back the threat of another round of tears.

It was her sister, Evie. "Did he really leave?" she asked softly.

"Yeah," Katrina whispered, glancing at the bare walls. "He said it's my loss."

There was a brief, heavy silence on the other end before her sister spoke, her voice fiercely steady.

"Katrina, look around you. Did you lose your kindness? Your future; Your worth, or your ability to love?"

She blinked, swallowing hard. "No."

"Then, it’s not your loss," Evie insisted. "He just took out the trash."

Katrina stared at the key, then out the window at the road ahead. A breath she didn’t realize she’d been holding finally escaped. She pocketed her phone, turned her back on the empty room, and walked out smiling, leaving the door unlocked.

Day 3213: your loss](https://peakd.com/hive-161155/@daily.prompt/1-september-2026-freewriters-community-daily-writing-prompt-day-3213-your-loss).

A continuación mi historia.

Taking Out the Trash Is Not A Loss

«Katrina, mira a tu alrededor. ¿Has perdido tu bondad? ¿Tu futuro, tu valor o tu capacidad de amar?».

Parpadeó y tragó saliva con dificultad. «No».
