Echoes Of Independence/Night Photography

Independence Day in Pakistan is not just a date on the calendar.It is a mood that takes over the entire country weeks before 14th August.The moment August begins,the streets,buildings and homes start to change.People stop caring about ordinary looks.They want green,white and light everywhere.
Look at this picture.It is night.The building named CITADEL is bathed in green light.That is not an accident.That is planning.That is the spirit of Independence Day.Volunteers and workers spend days putting up fairy lights,LED strips and neon signs.They wrap trees with small bulbs.They place cutouts of crescent and star on lawns.They write "Pakistan" and "14 August" in big glowing letters so that anyone passing by will feel something.
The preparations start in markets first.Shops bring out flags,badges,bangles,dresses and face paints.Children are the first customers.They buy green and white everything.Then comes the decoration of housing societies,plazas and government buildings.Committees meet.Budgets are made.People argue about which color of light looks better.In the end,green wins.It always wins.
Electricians are hired.Painters are called.Gardeners plant extra flowers.Banners with Quaid-e-Azam and Allama Iqbal go up on main roads.Schools practice tableaus and songs.TV channels start playing patriotic music on repeat.Even food stalls change their menu boards to green and white themes.
It is loud.It is a bit chaotic.It is also honest. People do not decorate because someone forced them.They do it because they want to feel proud for one day without apology.For one day, the country does not look tired.It looks alive.
The night in this photo shows that effort. The grass has LED lines running through it.The bushes have small warm lights.A woman is taking a picture.A man is standing near the "Pakistan" sign.Nobody told them to come.They came because the place looked worth seeing.
That is what Independence Day decoration does.It turns normal concrete and grass into a place that reminds people what freedom cost.It is not perfect.Some lights will not work.Some flags will tear.But the attempt itself matters.
We decorate not to impress tourists.We decorate to remind ourselves that we are still here,still standing,still choosing to celebrate.And for that one night,the whole country glows green.
