Brazil - Our first day as tourists in Foz do Iguaçu: an exploratory walk around the city. / Nuestro primer día como turistas en Foz de Iguazú: caminata exploratoria por los alrededores de la ciudad. 😃❤️

Technically, it was our second day in Foz do Iguaçu , but it was the first one when we actually got to see the light of day, so for me, the one I’m about to tell you about was our first outing. After a long journey by plane from home to Córdoba, from Córdoba to Puerto Iguazú, and then a taxi to Foz, we had arrived at our hotel at night. Luckily, it was still early enough to have dinner, but it was Sunday and there wasn’t much else to do at that hour. That’s why we had to wait until the next day to get up early and start carrying out our more or less planned itinerary. You know that when I travel, I like to improvise a little, although that was back when I had too much free time to do so. The trip to the Iguazú Falls area with my dad lasted 8 nights, as part of my first vacation since I started working full-time as an Engineer. In Argentina, the law says that for each year worked during the first five years, you are entitled to two weeks of vacation. Of the two weeks I had from the previous year, I decided to take one week off to go on this trip so my dad could see the Falls 😃.
Técnicamente era nuestro segundo día en Foz de Iguazú , pero era el primero en el que veíamos la luz del día, así que para mí, este que les voy a contar ahora fue el de nuestro primer paseo. Después de un largo viaje en avión desde casa hasta Córdoba, desde Córdoba hasta Puerto Iguazú y luego un taxi hasta Foz, habíamos llegado a nuestro hotel a la noche. Por suerte todavía era temprano como para cenar, pero era domingo y no había mucho más que hacer a esa hora. Fue por eso que tuvimos que esperar hasta el siguiente día para levantarnos temprano y empezar a concretar nuestro itinerario más o menos planeado. Saben que durante los viajes me gusta improvisar un poco, aunque esto era cuando tenía demasiado tiempo libre para hacerlo. El viaje hasta la zona de las Cataratas del Iguazú con mi papá fue de 8 noches, en el marco de mis primeras vacaciones desde que empecé a trabajar full time como Ingeniera. En Argentina, la ley dice que corresponden dos semanas de vacaciones por año trabajado, durante los cinco primeros años de contrato. De las dos semanas del año pasado, decidí tomarme una semana libre para hacer este paseo para que mi papá conociera las Cataratas 😃.

That trip was my third time in that area of the map between the border of Argentina and Brazil, and to do things a little differently, this time I decided that we should stay on the Brazilian side. I found a reasonably priced hotel in a central area, which I thought would allow us to explore quite a few places since we were close to the bus terminal. You know, the times I had visited neighboring countries, I had never been the one in charge of putting together the itinerary, so this time I was a little nervous about it, but luckily, everything turned out pretty well. When you plan to visit the Falls, a three-day trip is more than enough, but I had plenty of extra time to take the trip at a more relaxed pace.
Ese paseo fue mi tercera vez por esa zona del mapa entre la frontera de Argentina y Brasil, y para hacer las cosas un poco diferentes, esta vez decidí que nos hospedáramos del lado brasilero. Ahí encontré un hotel a buen precio en una zona del centro que, según yo, nos permitiría recorrer bastantes lugares ya que estábamos cerca de la terminal de buses. Saben, las veces que fui a los países vecinos nunca me encargué de armar el itinerario, así que esta vez estaba un poco nerviosa por eso, pero por suerte todo salió bastante bien. Cuando uno planea ir a conocer las Cataratas, con un viaje de tres días alcanza y sobra, pero yo tenía bastante tiempo extra como para hacer el paseo en modo relajado.

Having enough time so that we didn’t have to rush to see the Falls allowed us to leave one day of the itinerary completely free to explore the city. I knew we wouldn’t be getting up that early that day, so we started with breakfast at the hotel and then went out for a little walk. It was also my dad’s first time in a foreign country, so we were both in full tourist mode, taking pictures everywhere and wanting to try new food. The city of Foz was quite nice and had several places to see beyond the Falls.
Tener tiempo suficiente como para no tener que ir corriendo a ver las Cataratas nos permitió tener un día de tiempo libre en la ciudad. Sabía que ese día no nos levantaríamos tan temprano, así que empezamos desayunando en el hotel y luego salimos a caminar un poco. También era la primera vez de mi papá en un país extranjero, así que ambos estábamos en modo turistas, sacándonos fotos en todos lados y queriendo probar comida nueva. La ciudad de Foz era bastante linda y tenía varios puntos para ver más allá de las Cataratas.

On our first outing, we dedicated ourselves to walking everywhere, exploring the city center first and then the area with the fancy buildings and luxury shopping malls. When lunchtime came, we took the opportunity to have something “local” called Strogonoff, although that name might not sound very Brazilian. One thing we loved about Brazil was that the prices were very convenient for our exchange rate, and even having lunch at a shopping mall as elegant as the one we visited, a meal cost us less than $10 per person. One of the things I was worried about was how I was going to pay, since I hadn’t brought any cash in dollars and didn’t have any Brazilian reais in bills either, but we managed perfectly well using the Pix app.
En nuestro primer paseo, nos dedicamos a caminar por todos lados, recorriendo primero el centro y luego la zona de edificios y shoppings lujosos. Cuando se hizo la hora del almuerzo, aprovechamos para almorzar algo "local" llamado Strogonoff, aunque ese nombre no suene tan brasilero. Algo que nos encantó de Brasil es que los precios eran muy convenientes para nuestro tipo de cambio, y aún almorzando en un shopping tan elegante como el que visitamos, un almuerzo nos costó menos de $10 por persona. Una de las cosas que me preocupaban era cómo iba a pagar, ya que no había llevado dólares en efectivo ni tenía reales en billetes, pero nos manejamos perfecto con la aplicación Pix.

Another place we wanted to visit during our outing was the Triple Frontier. There is an area on the map where the three countries—Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil—come together, separated by the Paraná and Iguazú Rivers, from where you can see all three territories at once. I had already visited this triple-border point from the Argentine side, but of course, it exists in all three countries. We wanted to visit the one on the Brazilian side, but by the time of our visit, it was closed. That’s right, a viewpoint closed because on this Brazilian side it has been privatized, and you had to pay $10 for admission. This left us with a strange feeling and we ended up not seeing it, although in my itinerary I had planned a visit to the same point from the Argentine side, which can be visited freely.
Otro punto que quisimos visitar en nuestro paseo fue el de la Triple Frontera. Hay una zona del mapa en donde se juntan los tres países: Argentina, Paraguay y Brasil, separados por los ríos Paraná e Iguazú, desde donde puedes observar los tres territorios a la vez. Yo ya había visitado este punto triple del lado argentino, pero por supuesto existe en los tres países. Quisimos visitar el del lado brasilero, pero para el momento de nuestra visita estaba cerrado. Así es, un mirador cerrado porque en este lado brasilero lo han privatizado y había que pagar $10 la entrada. Esto nos dejó una sensación extraña y nos quedamos sin verlo, aunque en mi itinerario yo tenía planeado una visita al mismo punto pero del lado de Argentina, el cual se visita libremente.

Exploring the surroundings of the city of Foz was our lightest day of sightseeing, since what I had planned for the following days would become a little more intense. Still, my dad has traveled with me several times and knows that going on vacation together isn’t exactly about resting, so he’s used to it. Before this trip, I had only spent a few hours on the Brazilian side during one of my visits to the Falls, so I was also excited to stay a few more days in the other country. Just like all the trips I plan, this one worked very well for both of us and managed to meet our expectations: we were just getting started, and we had already discovered several things about how to get around Brazil 😃.
Recorrer los alrededores de la ciudad de Foz fue nuestro día de paseo más liviano, ya que lo que tenía planeado para los siguientes días se volvería un poco más intenso. De todos modos, mi papá ya viajó varias veces conmigo y sabe que vacacionar juntos no es para descansar, así que está acostumbrado. Antes de este paseo, yo solamente había estado unas horas del lado brasilero en una de las visitas a las Cataratas, así que también estaba emocionada por quedarme unos días más en el otro país. Al igual que todos los viajes que planeo, este paseo funcionó muy bien para los dos y logró cumplir nuestras expectativas: recién empezábamos el viaje y ya habíamos descubierto varias cosas sobre cómo manejarnos por el territorio de Brasil 😃.
