Motherhood Is a Part of Me, Not All of Me

Someone looks at me and said, motherhood has really change you, or should I say It has add another part to who you are and this really got me thinking. https://img.leopedia.io/DQmWmuSTdvcDkLqGHBrRr7qtTGbW7ecnPRPLbupxX5zCmJB/1000269240.jpg

I have asked myself this question more than once since becoming a mother. Does motherhood actually change who I am, or do I simply become another version of myself?
For me, I think it is a little bit of both.
Before motherhood, I had my own plans, dreams, interests, and the things that made me who I was. I could make decisions based mostly on what I wanted or what was best for me. I had time to do things at my own pace. Then motherhood came along, and suddenly, another little human being became part of almost every decision I made. Even simple things changed.
Going out was no longer just about picking up my bag and leaving. Sleeping was no longer something I could take for granted. Sometimes even having a quiet shower felt like a luxury.
But somewhere in all those changes, I also started discovering a different side of myself.
Motherhood has made me more patient, although I must admit I am still working on that one. It has made me stronger in ways I didn't expect. There are days when I feel completely exhausted, yet somehow I still find the strength to never give up.
And that, to me, is one of the strange and beautiful things about motherhood.
You can be tired and happy at the same time. You can be frustrated one minute and laughing the next. You can desperately want five minutes alone, and then miss your child when they finally give you that five minutes.
I also think there is a danger in believing that being a mother means we have to forget everything else about ourselves.
Sometimes, they put so much pressure on women to be “good mothers” that we forget mothers are people too. We have dreams, we have hobbies, we have careers, we have friendships, we have things we want to accomplish outside of raising our children.
Loving your children does not mean you have to stop loving the person you were before they came along.
I don't think becoming a mother means the old version of me disappeared. She is still there. She just has more responsibilities now, and probably a lot less sleep.
The woman I was before motherhood taught me many things, and the woman I am becoming through motherhood is teaching me even more.
There are also things I miss about my old life sometimes, and I think it is okay to admit that. Missing your freedom does not mean you don't love your child. Wanting time for yourself does not make you selfish. Sometimes you simply need a little space to remember that you are more than just someone's mother.
Motherhood has added another identity to mine. I am still a woman with my own dreams and personality. I am still a friend, a daughter, a partner, and an individual. Now, I am also a mother, and that role has become a very important part of my story.
Maybe motherhood doesn't really take away who I am. Maybe it simply introduces me to a side of myself I didn't know existed.
And perhaps that is the real change.
We don't necessarily lose ourselves when we become mothers, we grow, we evolve. Sometimes we get a little lost along the way, but we can always find our way back.
Motherhood is a part of my identity, but it is not my entire identity. And honestly, I think there is something beautiful about that.
Thank for checking on my blog and have a wonderful day
