Hello dear @holos-lotus community,

When I started this series, I said that I wanted to question some of the ideas we learn and carry with us without always stopping to ask whether they still make sense.

Today I want to question one that seems almost normal in our daily lives:

If I am not doing something useful, am I wasting my time?

I have noticed that sometimes the hardest thing for me is not having too much to do.

It is having nothing that needs to be done.

Imagine an ordinary afternoon. No urgent messages, no pending obligations, no place you need to be. You make yourself a cup of coffee and sit down. Maybe you look through the window for a while. Maybe you simply stare at the ceiling and let your thoughts wander.

Nothing is wrong.

Nothing needs to be fixed.

And yet, after a few minutes, a strange feeling appears.

Guilt.

> > No pasa nada. > > Culpa.

Why do we feel guilty for resting?

I think part of the answer is that we have learned to associate being busy with being valuable.

When someone asks us how our day is going, saying “I have been so busy” almost sounds like proof that we are doing something important.

We fill our calendars.

We answer messages immediately.

We create lists.

We find small tasks when the bigger ones are finished.

We clean something that was already clean.

We check our phones.

We organize things that could easily wait until tomorrow.

And sometimes we even turn rest into another task.

“Today I need to relax.”

As if relaxation were something we could complete and check off a list.

It is strange when you think about it.

We can spend an entire day exhausted and feel proud because we accomplished many things.

But we can spend an afternoon doing absolutely nothing productive and feel as if we have failed.

I have caught myself doing this more than once.

Sitting with a coffee, enjoying the quiet, and suddenly thinking about all the things I could be doing.

I could answer that message.

I could organize that drawer.

I could read something useful.

I could learn something.

I could start that project.

I could make tomorrow's list.

And before I realize it, the peaceful moment has disappeared.

The coffee is still there, but I am no longer enjoying it.

My body is sitting down, but my mind is already running somewhere else.

That is when I have started asking myself an uncomfortable question:

Why do I feel that every free minute needs to justify its existence?

Perhaps we have confused movement with progress.

Being busy can give us the comforting sensation that we are moving forward, even when we are simply moving from one task to another.

But not every movement has a destination.
