The power of veto. Should a single individual wield all that power?

Perhaps one of the greatest concentrations of power available to a leader or a politician is theveto power. This is the authority one individual can be granted to override, negate or void a decision made by elected representatives. While the veto power in one's position could in a rare circumstance protect the country from a disastrous proposal or piece of legislation, allowing a single person unlimited veto power is detrimental to democracy, the rule of law and the establishment of accountability. There have been instances where veto power has been beneficial to the country: perhaps a leader needs the ability to override legislation that is detrimental to national security or that infringes upon one of the nation's rights stated in the constitution. Perhaps it is useful in order to avert tyranny of the masses where a decision made by the majority could harm the few; in this scenario, veto power could check an abuse of authority.
Unlimited veto power on the other hand, can prove to be quite problematic. If a single individual has enough authority to invalidate any and every governmental proposal made by either elected officials or even the people themselves without consideration for any sort of legal proceedings or national well-being, then that person wields significantly more power than anyone in government who represents the public. Although there may be other branches in the same government who may be in opposition to a veto decision, there is no means of nullifying the veto. This opens the door for abuse and corruption.
A nation's government needs checks and balances in order to function properly. Any individual that holds veto power needs to have a transparent system, along with limitations and clear guidelines as to when and why a veto has been or will be utilized. Limitations to the power need to be clear to citizens of the nation.
It is unjust for a single individual to have all of the authority necessary to have a decision voided or overruled, while at the same time never be subject to similar means to override their decisions.
No person can be trusted with that amount of power; leaders are human and although well intentioned many mistakes are made on either emotional or irrational grounds. The people should have the authority to have leaders challenged, tested, and ultimately held accountable for the policies or laws they are implementing.
