As I mentioned in a previous post, I intended to return to the University of Lanús to explore it thoroughly and discover the wonders it offers not only to the university community but also to anyone who visits.
Perhaps it’s just the excitement of being in an environment I love, but honestly, strolling through the spacious plazas and open areas of this university is like uncovering a treasure bit by bit.

In this case, I stopped for quite a while in one of the gardens, where there were busts made of metal panels that played with angles and light, each one representing a national hero or historical figure.

First, I recognized two figures in the background who are important to both local and personal history. When I saw them, my immediate thought was, “Those have to be José de San Martín and Simón Bolívar.” I walked closer to confirm my suspicions, and it brought a smile to my face to realize that I still remember those history classes from school.

The nice thing is that as I got closer, I saw that there were other figures in the side gardens; unfortunately, not all of them had labels identifying who they were. However, their poses and the setting in which they were placed indicate that their actions marked milestones in the history of their countries or communities.

Among them all, there is only one female figure, and beyond taking a feminist stance, I think it would be good to include some prominent women who can inspire that segment of the university population to strive for more than they’ve already been able to achieve.

Something that really amused me was seeing how people passing by would stare at me while I was taking photos; since the busts are part of the usual scenery, they probably don’t give them the same significance I did—being there for the first time—in addition to the emotional significance of acknowledging the history that came before us and that was, in part, the cause of what we now see as its consequences.

The artist behind all these works is Gonzalo Ramírez, who created these busts between 2015 and 2016, as well as a separate piece called "Unidos" (United), which serves as a unifying element for all these pieces.
