TBT Un día de esos Hoy traigo al ruedo un recuerdo familiar, junto a mi suegra, mi suegra activa en su casa, siendo ella, atendiendo a la visita, ofreciendo cafe, desayuno, ese día llegamos temprano mi esposo, mi hija y yo, allá nos reunimos también con una sobrina mi cuñada, compartimos nos pusimos al día con lo ocurrido en el pueblo. Mi suegra energíca no paraba de hablar y de hacer oficios, ella nunca se dejaba ayudar era para todo y todos, veo esa foto y realmente no ha pasado mucho tiempo unos cuatro años tal vez no tengo la noción exacta, pero si lo que sí ese corto tiempo le ha hecho a la memoria de mi suegra, ella tiene una enfermedad mental, un trastorno neurocognitivo mayor, demencia o Alzheimer, ha olvidado sus años recientes, confunde los nombres de los hijos con los de los hermanos, sus preocupaciones cambiaron, vive pendiente de sus hijos chiquitos a veces su mente la lleva más al pasado cuando vivía con sus padres, algunas veces es estudiante, otras veces una trabajadora doméstica o vendedora de pescado en una playa de Rio Caribe donde nació y vivió hasta los 14 años. No es agresiva, pero es como convivir con una niña más, va al baño sola pero hay que estar pendiente porque en cualquier momento hace su desastre, allgunas veces tiene sus momentos de lucidez y me pregunta por sus nietos, mi nombre no se le olvida a sus hijos no los recuerda como hijos sino cree son sus hermanos mayores, su mirada profunda esa que siempre nos acompañó, vigiló, amó y protegió ha desaparecido.
>Throwback Thursday Today I'm sharing a family memory, with my mother-in-law. She was always busy at home, welcoming visitors, offering coffee and breakfast. That day, my husband, my daughter, and I arrived early. We also met up with my niece, my sister-in-law, and caught up on what was happening in town. My energetic mother-in-law never stopped talking and doing chores; she never let anyone help her. She was always there for everyone. I look at that photo, and it really hasn't been that long—maybe four years, I'm not exactly sure—but what I do know is that this short time has taken its toll on my mother-in-law's memory. She has a mental illness, a major neurocognitive disorder, dementia or Alzheimer's. She has forgotten recent years, confuses her children's names with her siblings' names, and her worries have changed. She's always looking after her young children, and sometimes her mind takes her back to when she lived with her parents. Sometimes she's a student, other times a domestic worker or a fishmonger on a beach in Rio Caribe, where she was born and lived until she was 14. She's not aggressive, but it's like living with another child. She goes to the bathroom by herself, but you have to keep an eye on her because she can make a mess at any moment. Sometimes she has lucid moments and asks me about her grandchildren. She doesn't forget my name. She doesn't remember her children as her own; she thinks they're her older siblings. Her deep gaze, the one that always accompanied us, watched over us, loved us, and protected us, has disappeared.
