The Dark Art of Master Lorenzo Greetings, friends who love literature. 💁☀️ Happy day to everyone!
This Saturday I want to share with you a short story inspired by an experience I recently had at a painting exhibition. I hope you enjoy it.
The Dark Art of Master Lorenzo
Ever since I began studying painting at the Academy, I had always admired Master Lorenzo. His works fascinated me for a reason I could never quite explain: he painted ordinary places, yet there was always a strange darkness in his landscapes.
That is why, when they announced that he would be giving a lecture at the Academy, I felt an enormous sense of excitement. Throughout the entire talk, I could barely take my eyes off him. When it ended, I waited until most of the people had left the room. I did not want to leave without asking him where that darkness I found so intriguing came from.
When I finally approached him, I spoke to him about his paintings and that feeling I always found in them. Lorenzo listened to me in silence and, after a few seconds, turned his gaze toward the empty room.
—Stay!
He took a canvas and placed it in front of the chairs where we had been sitting just minutes before. Without saying anything else, he began to paint.
At first, I recognized every detail of the room. The walls, the table, the windows, and the rows of chairs took shape on the canvas with astonishing precision. I was impressed by the way Lorenzo reproduced everything; it seemed as though he were copying exactly what was in front of him.
Then he began to draw a woman sitting in one of the first rows. She was smiling, but her face had a strange pallor. I looked toward that chair, but it was empty. Lorenzo continued painting. Farther back, he drew a tall man with his neck twisted to one side and arms so long they almost touched the floor. Then he sketched the figure of an obese man sitting beside a window, with a dark mark around his neck, like the imprint left by a rope.
Each new stroke increased my curiosity. I wondered where Lorenzo got so much imagination to paint those figures with such precision. Finally, I could not hold back and asked him if he had some kind of trick for doing it.
—I paint exactly what I have in front of me.
His words made me scan the room again, searching for an explanation. I looked at the chairs, the windows, the door, and every corner I could see, but I found nothing out of place. Everything was empty. When I looked back at the canvas, Lorenzo had begun drawing a new figure, this time much closer to us.
Lorenzo noticed my expression of astonishment, placed the brush on the table, and studied the painting for a few seconds. Then he turned toward me and spoke words that left me motionless.
—Here is the answer to the darkness in my paintings. I paint what you cannot see.
I hope you enjoyed this little story and that it gave you a slight chill. I wish you a peaceful and relaxing weekend, filled with good energy.
A hug. 💁🌈
