Hello, Gems friends.

There are places in a hotel that guests never see.

There are also women whose work is so quiet that even some of their coworkers may not realize how much depends on them.

The linen room is one of those places.

It is not the most glamorous room in the hotel.

There are no sea views, no music, no cocktails, and no guests taking photographs.

There are shelves.

Carts.

Stacks of folded sheets.

Piles of towels.

Pillowcases.

Uniforms.

And numbers.

Lots of numbers.

In the middle of all that is Teresa.

I call her the Queen of the Linen Room.

Not because she gives orders.

Not because anyone bows when she walks in.

Her kingdom is made of shelves, lists, memory, and experience.

Teresa knows that room almost without having to look.

She can tell which sheets are newer, which towels have already had several lives, which pieces should be kept for a special situation, and which ones can still serve perfectly well for another day.

She knows that not every white sheet is the same.

Some have survived countless washes.

Others are still almost new.

Some towels have lost their softness but are perfectly useful.

Others have reached the point where no amount of folding can hide their age.

Teresa knows all of this.

And she remembers.

One morning, I was passing nearby when a housekeeper came in looking worried.

She had an inspection coming up and needed several good sets of linen.

She did not have much time.

"Teresa, please tell me you have something decent left."

Teresa looked at her.

She did not answer immediately.

She walked between the shelves.

She checked one stack.

Then another.

She opened a cabinet.

Moved a few pieces.

And finally smiled.

"Wait here."

A few minutes later she came back carrying exactly what the woman needed.

"These will work."

The housekeeper looked relieved.

"How did you know you still had those?"

Teresa laughed.
