Hello, Gems friends.
There are smells that can take us somewhere without asking permission.
The smell of coffee in the morning.
The smell of rain on the pavement.
The scent of someone's perfume.
And then there are smells that carry a whole story.
For some of the women who work in hotels, one of those smells is the scent of a small bar of soap.
---
Every day, hotel rooms are cleaned and prepared for new guests.
The sheets are changed.
The towels are replaced.
The bathroom is cleaned until everything looks untouched.
On the counter, there may be a small bottle of shampoo, a shower gel, or a little bar of soap.
For a guest, it is simply part of the hotel experience.
Something provided by the hotel.
Something that may be used once or twice and then forgotten.
But sometimes, when a guest leaves something behind and the circumstances allow it to be taken, that little bottle or bar of soap can have a second life.
And that second life may be very far from the hotel.
---
I remember one of my coworkers showing me a small collection of hotel soaps she had kept at home.
They were not arranged like a collection.
They were simply inside a little bag in her bathroom.
Different shapes.
Different brands.
Different scents.
Some almost unused.
She laughed when she showed them to me.
"Look at all these little luxuries."
She was joking, but there was also some truth in what she said.
Because something that can seem completely ordinary to one person can feel surprisingly special to another.
A small bottle of shampoo with a scent you don't usually find.
A little bar of soap that lasts longer than expected.
A conditioner that smells like flowers.
Nothing extravagant.
Nothing that would make anyone rich.
But enough to make an ordinary bathroom feel slightly different.
---
I have often thought about that contrast without anger.
The tourist arrives at the hotel carrying suitcases full of clothes, cameras, phones, and plans for a few days of relaxation.
The hotel places little bottles of shampoo and soap in the bathroom because that is part of the service.
The guest uses what they need.
Some things remain.
The guest leaves.
And the room begins again for someone else.
Meanwhile, outside the hotel, another reality continues.
A woman returns home after her shift and has to think about how to stretch what she has.
Perhaps she has bought a basic bar of soap.
