Today Iâm here to show you what itâs like to do physical therapy internships in the sports field, specifically in rugby đ.
From my perspective, sports physical therapy is a bit different from general physical therapy because you have to understand the sport and the specific movements involved in order to prevent injuries in athletes and enhance their abilities. Plus, since rugby is a sport thatâs actually quite complicated to understand, these internships turned out to be my most challenging ones.
The positions we worked with in rugby were the backs and the forwards; the forwards are responsible for contact, the battle for the ball, and power, while the backs contribute speed, passing plays, and open field play. In my case, I focused more on the backs; as physical therapists, we felt it was best to split up so that each group could focus on a specific position to do the job more effectively đŤ .

Our job was to create training plans, design plyometric exercises, and, of course, treat the injured playersâand letâs be honest, there are a lot of them in this sport, haha.
Injuries can range from sprains to fractures due to the sheer force of the tackles. Most of the injuries I treated were knee-related because of the rapid wear and tear they experienceâsprains, tendinopathies in the shoulder, and a lot of strain on the cervical and lumbar spine. On the other hand, we perform muscle relaxation exercises on the players when necessary.
When we had to go to the games, our job was to apply bandages, stay on the lookout in case we needed to go onto the field for an injured player, and treat wounds and bruises if there wasnât a paramedic presentâand believe me, in this sport, that happens all the time đ˘.

Clearly, it wasnât just about treating wounds and injuriesâwe also talked a lot with the players, shared laughs, and little by little we became friends with many of them, so much so that we still go to games even though weâre not their official physical therapists anymoreâthough those guys are really cool and very good at what they do.
As for me, I still havenât completely shaken the fear that they might suffer a very serious injury from those hits and tumbles on the floorâmy face was priceless every time I saw them on the ground, hahaha. You gradually get used to it, but those images really are intense đ.

Despite how demanding and challenging the sport was, these were some really great internships, although there were some ups and downs in terms of communication between the physical therapists and the supervisorâwhich sometimes led to moments that left a bad taste in my mouthâbut nothing that couldnât be worked out. I guess thatâs just how life goes; Iâd come from two incredible internships, and it was about time I had one that would really test my patience đ.
Thanks for reading my post. If you want some tips on how to avoid injuries in your daily life, just leave a comment.
See you in the next post, bye â¤ď¸â¨.
