Es un placer compartir la pasión por la música. Como músico y pianista, a menudo reflexiono sobre la inmensa evolución que tuvo la interpretación de tan complejo instrumento durante el siglo pasado. El siglo XX fue, sin duda, el siglo de oro del piano, tanto por el esplendor técnico alcanzado, como por la difusión del arte musical a gran escala gracias a la llegada de los Medios Masivos de Comunicación. Vimos cómo la tradición musical se fusionó con nuevas tecnologías de grabación, permitiendo que la magia de los grandes intérpretes quedara inmortalizada para siempre. Hoy quiero compartirles mi Top 3 personal de los pianistas que, a mi juicio, marcaron un antes y un después en la historia del piano.

Today, I want to share my personal Top 3 list of pianists who, in my opinion, marked a turning point in the history of the piano.

1. Vladimir Horowitz: El trueno del Romanticismo Vladimir Horowitz: The Thunder of Romanticism
Nacido en Kiev en 1903 (Ucrania), Horowitz fue una auténtica fuerza de la naturaleza en los escenarios. Lo que siempre me ha fascinado de él, más allá de su asombrosa pirotecnia técnica, es su concepción puramente orquestal del piano. Tenía una forma muy particular de atacar las teclas, a menudo con los dedos ¡inusualmente planos! -Una completa locura para muchos-, lo que le permitía extraer unos bajos profundos, rotundos y unos agudos cristalinos que parecían campanadas. Su dominio del color tonal y su capacidad para llevar la dinámica desde el pianissimo más frágil y delicado hasta un fortissimo abrumador lo hacían inigualable, especialmente en el repertorio del Romanticismo.

His mastery of tonal color and his ability to take the dynamics from the most fragile and delicate pianissimo to an overwhelming fortissimo made him unparalleled, especially in the Romantic repertoire.

2. Martha Argerich: El fuego indomable Martha Argerich: The Untamed Fire
La legendaria pianista argentina es, sin exagerar, una de las intérpretes más intuitivas y apasionadas de la historia de la música clásica. Argerich no solo toca el piano; respira a través de él, lo vive en cada nota, en cada tecla... Desde una perspectiva técnica, posee un mecanismo infalible y unos reflejos de precisión felina, pero lo que la hace verdaderamente única es su espontaneidad. Sus interpretaciones nunca suenan calculadas; parece que está componiendo la obra en el momento exacto en que la toca. Su fraseo tiene una fluidez y un rubato tan orgánico que logra que pasajes técnica y armónicamente complejos suenen con la fluidez y naturalidad de una conversación cotidiana.

Her phrasing has such an organic fluidity and rubato that she makes technically and harmonically complex passages sound as fluid and natural as an everyday conversation.

3. Glenn Gould: El arquitecto intelectual Glenn Gould: The Intellectual Architect
El canadiense Glenn Gould cambió para siempre nuestra manera de escuchar a Johann Sebastian Bach. Gould era un excéntrico genial, un "Farmeador de Aura" innato que, a diferencia de los dos pianistas anteriores, prefirió alejarse del repertorio romántico tradicional para centrarse obsesivamente en el contrapunto. Como analista musical, me maravilla su uso del toque non legato, casi imitando la sequedad y precisión matemática de un clavecín, pero aprovechando de forma magistral los matices del piano moderno, resultando en una suerte de síntesis sonora deliciosa. Gould podía desarmar una fuga de Bach y exponer cada una de sus voces (soprano, contralto, tenor, bajo) con una claridad estructural que pocos pianistas han logrado igualar. Lo único criticable de este singular maestro es que se empeñaba en tararear la melodía mientras tocaba, llegándose a colar tan fastidioso balbuceo en las grabaciones. Otro aspecto difícil de imitar, por lo desaconsejable, es que solía tocar con una silla muy baja que hacía que sus codos quedaran por debajo del teclado. Sin embargo, estas eran cosas que le funcionaban muy bien a él, y que de ninguna manera le opacaron, por el contrario, lo hicieron único y genial.
> Canadian Glenn Gould forever changed the way we listen to Johann Sebastian Bach. Gould was a brilliant eccentric, a born "Aura Farmer" who, unlike the two previous pianists, preferred to move away from the traditional Romantic repertoire to focus obsessively on counterpoint. As a music analyst, I am amazed by his use of the non legato touch, almost imitating the dryness and mathematical precision of a harpsichord, but masterfully exploiting the nuances of the modern piano, resulting in a kind of delightful sonic synthesis. Gould could deconstruct a Bach fugue and expose each of its voices (soprano, alto, tenor, bass) with a structural clarity that few pianists have managed to match. The only criticism of this singular maestro is that he insisted on humming the melody while playing, and this annoying babble even crept into the recordings. Another aspect that's difficult to imitate, and therefore inadvisable, is that he used to play with a very low chair that left his elbows below the keyboard. However, these were things that worked very well for him, and in no way diminished his talent; on the contrary, they made him unique and brilliant.

Es muy difícil e ingrato hacer un Top 3 de pianistas del s. XX, no importa la intención, siempre resultará una lista injusta e insuficiente. No en vano, la centuria pasada fue considerada la época dorada del piano, con figuras como Sviatoslav Richter, Arthur Rubinstein, Claudio Arrau, Ivo Pogorelich, Evgeny Kissin, entre otros, no podía sino estar destinada a ser una época de esplendor pianístico. Hoy, ese legado continúa inspirando nuevas generaciones de pianistas.
