It had been several months since I’d been able to go to the Havana coastline to take photos of shorebirds; the last time I was there, there weren’t many—well, I think practically none—but things are different now. The migration of these birds from North America to the Caribbean has just begun, and the place was teeming with them.
Llevaba varios meses sin poder ir a la zona del litoral habanero para hacer fotos de aves playeras; la última ocasión que allí estuve no había muchas, bueno, creo que prácticamente ninguna, pero ya la cosa es diferente, recién comienza la emigración de estas aves desde Norteamérica al Caribe y el lugar estaba lleno de ellas.
I’ll tell you, nothing gets my adrenaline pumping more than this kind of photography, and when it comes to action shots, that’s when I really get into it.
Les cuento que no hay cosa que me suba más la adrenalina al cuerpo que hacer este tipo de fotografía, y si de fotos al vuelo se trata, ahí sí me dan por la vena del gusto.
I didn’t go alone—it’s not wise because of the risk of muggings, and that spot is pretty remote—but I was lucky to have some good friends come along with me.
No fui solo, no es prudente por el tema de los asaltos y ese lugar está apartado, pero tuve la suerte de que me acompañaran buenos amigos.

My focus was on the seagulls; they’re very dynamic and a real challenge. My camera is getting on in years and a bit slow to focus, but even so, I struggle to get the shot.
El centro de mi atención fueron las gaviotas; son bien dinámicas y un reto. Mi equipo es ya entrado en años y un poco lento para enfocar, pero igual, ahí batallo para sacar la foto.
As noon approached, we had to leave; the sun gets intense and there’s nowhere to take shelter, but we’re already planning to go back, possibly this weekend.
Ya casi llegado el mediodía nos tuvimos que ir; el sol se pone intenso y no hay donde refugiarse, pero igual ya están planificando regresar posiblemente el fin de semana.
