A guardian for my succulents [Eng/Esp]

I confess that I have been smiling like a fool for days every time I poke my head into my garden. It is not to water, not to prune, not even to catch the morning sun. It is to look at her, my new neighbor.

It happened three Tuesdays ago. There I was, with my tweezers and my monk-like patience, stripping the dry little leaves from my succulents. There is one pot in particular that is my jewel, a mix of Graptopetalum paraguayense. It is also called "marble flower" or "ghost succulent" because of that waxy pallor that looks as if it were sculpted from moonstone. Well, among its silvery rosettes, something green moved.

And there she was: a frog, but not just any frog. A huge frog, for what one expects to find among the soil of a flowerpot. The size of my closed fist, with bulging eyes that looked at me without fear.

I stood frozen, not out of fear, but out of wonder. She was there, as if she had sprouted from the very earth of the succulents, an ancestral spirit that had chosen my pot to rest in.

During the first few days I watched her cautiously, afraid that she would leave, that it was all a mirage, but she stayed. She settled among the rosettes of Graptopetalum, right in the gap left by the fallen leaves, and she remains motionless, camouflaged among the greyish green of the succulents. It looks like a Magritte painting: a surrealist frog perched on vegetable marble.

Then I noticed something: the mealybugs, those cursed cottony plagues that I hate so much, began to disappear, and the aphids diminished. My frog was hunting. I do not know if she eats bugs by day or by night, but the fact is that my succulents have never been so clean, so smooth, and so happy.

Now, every morning, I greet my guardian. I talk to her. Sometimes, when the afternoon sun tints the leaves a rosy tone, she changes position. I photograph her, I draw her in my mind, and I think this is more than a coincidence.

I take care of my succulents with care, and she, in return, protects them. She does not eat my plants, she does not crush them. She merely exists among them and is their green shadow, their golden-eyed guardian.

I have read that frogs need moisture, that they should not be in dry substrates, but she has chosen this pot. Sometimes I think that life gives you signs, and that when you least expect it, a giant frog appears among your succulents to show you that the wild always finds a way in.

VERSIร“N EN ESPAร‘OL

Sucediรณ hace tres martes.

Me quedรฉ paralizada, y no de miedo, sino de asombro.

No sรฉ si come bichos de dรญa o de noche, pero el caso es que mis suculentas nunca habรญan estado tan limpias, tan tersas y tan felices.

Ahora, cada maรฑana, saludo a mi guardiana.

Ella no come mis plantas, no las aplasta.

He leรญdo que las ranas necesitan humedad, que no deberรญan estar en sustratos secos, pero ella ha elegido esta maceta.
