It could even be one of the biggest sporting events in the world this weekend. According to google, it is number two behind the grand prix which is a three day event so you could say 100K per session...
Katie Taylor will go down as the greatest female boxer to date, one of the greatest boxers of all time and one of the greatest Irish athletes of all time.
You can look at her stats but they only tell one part of her story. It tells the story of her accomplishments inside the ring. The medals, the Olympics, the belts.
- Two-Weight Undisputed Champion: One of only eight boxers in history to hold all four major world title belts (WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO) simultaneously in two different weight classes. - Olympic Gold Medalist: Captured gold at the London 2012 Games as the world's first-ever Olympic women's lightweight boxing champion. - Amateur Dominance: Amassed a near-flawless amateur record, including 5 consecutive World Championship and 6 European Championship gold medals. - History-Maker: Headlined the first-ever women's combat sports event to sell out Madison Square Garden in her legendary 2022 bout against Amanda Serrano. - Dual-Sport Star: Represented the Republic of Ireland Women's National Football Team, earning 11 senior international caps before focusing fully on boxing. - Record Attendance Draw: Officially bowed out of professional boxing by selling out the 82,300-capacity Croke Park stadium in Dublin.
But the other side was her drive to change the sport itself and how she played such a huge part in getting it recognized as an Olympic sport and then to bring the professional ranks into the limelight headlining huge shows and drawing in record figures.
Tonight's fight is massive and the result of years of work and negotiation. The result itself isn't the biggest take away but it will be nice if Katie can sign off with a win.
The take away is a female athlete in a tiny country can sell out a massive 83,000 seater stadium in less than an hour. That says enough about her legacy in the sport and in the country. It could possibly be the most watched program in the country this year when we look back in December.
I don't think that we have any other athlete that could do it by themselves and there are very few in the world that could do it either. I'm going to settle back and enjoy the spectacle for the rest of the evening and hope that she gets the send off she deserves.
