Travel Journal: Düsseldorf & Eltz Castle (Germany)

My girlfriend and I went on another little road trip, although this time we stayed in Germany instead of traveling abroad. We jokingly called it our little retiree trip, since most of the destinations are particularly popular with older visitors. 😄

We started with one night in Düsseldorf before continuing on to the Moselle Valley, the German Wine Route, and Heidelberg.

After arriving in Düsseldorf around lunchtime, our hotel room wasn’t ready yet. We had expected that, so we decided to walk into Düsseldorf’s Old Town instead. The weather was absolutely wonderful — actually, it was already almost too hot! And as it turned out, the heat was going to be a constant throughout our vacation.

For lunch, we headed to Uerige in the Old Town. I had been there a few times before, but it was my girlfriend’s first visit. I really like the place, and apart from the traditional Altbier, they also serve a variety of classic German dishes. I went for the Schweinerollbraten, a delicious rolled pork roast:

After lunch, we continued with a walk along the Rhine. However, because of the heat, we kept it a little shorter than planned. We also made our way past the famous Königsallee, or “Kö,” as the locals call it.

By the time we returned to the Hotel Windsor, our room was ready. And what a beautiful room it was! The breakfast was fantastic as well. We’ll definitely book this hotel again the next time we’re in Düsseldorf. In fact, we’re already planning another trip there before Christmas to do some Christmas shopping!

For dinner, we headed to Little Tokyo, Düsseldorf’s famous Japanese district, and had ramen at Takumi Ramen. We also ordered some takoyaki — octopus balls — which I had never tried before. The entire day was a fantastic start to our vacation!

After dinner, we went to a shisha bar. I normally don’t post pictures from places like that, but I just had to share this photo of the bathroom with you:

The next morning, after another fantastic breakfast buffet, we continued our road trip towards the Moselle Valley. But before reaching our next destination, we made a stop at Eltz Castle and hiked through the forest to get there.

It was extremely crowded, so we decided not to wait in line for a tour of the castle. The walk through the forest and seeing the castle from the outside were still incredibly relaxing, though!

In my next blog post, I’ll tell you all about our stay in the Moselle Valley.

Until then! 👋
