Bitcoin is becoming the condor of the energy system. 🧡
In nature, scavengers play an essential role.
The Andean condor doesn’t hunt healthy animals. It feeds on what is already dead, material that would otherwise go unused, and turns it back into value for the ecosystem.
Bitcoin mining can play a surprisingly similar role in energy markets.
Renewable electricity has a peculiar problem: you cannot always produce it when people need it.
The wind may blow at 3 a.m. The sun may shine when the grid is already saturated. A remote generator may produce electricity faster than transmission infrastructure can carry it away.
When nobody can use that electricity, it is stranded energy. The producer may have to curtail generation, or even pay someone to take the power.
Enter the energy scavenger.
In Brazil, several companies are now experimenting with exactly this idea:
Adecoagro is mining Bitcoin with surplus electricity from its sugarcane operations. Renova is using Bitcoin mining alongside a wind farm to absorb energy that would otherwise be curtailed. Casa dos Ventos, one of Brazil’s largest wind producers, is developing a similar operation.
Why Bitcoin mining?
Because miners are unusual industrial consumers. They can go where the energy is. They can switch on when electricity is abundant and cheap, and switch off when the grid needs it elsewhere.
They can be a buyer of last resort for electricity nobody else wants.
And what do they produce from it?
Not aluminium, hydrogen or fertilizer that then needs to be transported somewhere, but a globally tradable digital asset that can be transmitted anywhere in minutes.
Like the condor, Bitcoin mining doesn't make the leftovers. It can simply make use of what the surrounding ecosystem cannot consume.
Of course, that doesn't mean all Bitcoin mining is beneficial, or that all electricity used for mining would otherwise be wasted.
But it does suggest a better question than:
“How much electricity does Bitcoin consume?”
Ask instead:
“What electricity does Bitcoin consume and what would have happened to it otherwise?”
As grids become increasingly dependent on intermittent renewable generation, that distinction matters more and more.
Perhaps Bitcoin mining has found an unexpected ecological niche: the energy scavenger. 🧡
