Imagine paying another country... to take your electricity. 🧡
Sounds absurd. Yet that's increasingly what's happening.
France's electricity grid operator (RTE) has just confirmed a trend that started in 2025: More and more electricity is being exported at negative prices.
In other words... There are moments when producing electricity is so difficult to stop that generators actually prefer paying someone else to consume it.
That should make us rethink a debate we've been having for years. For a long time, flexible electricity consumers, especially Bitcoin miners, were portrayed as the problem.
What if they're part of the solution? The real issue is matching production with consumption.
Solar peaks at midday. Wind doesn't ask permission before blowing. Nuclear plants aren't designed to switch on and off every hour.
The result? Sometimes the grid produces more electricity than society can immediately use.
Historically, that surplus has often been:
curtailed, exported at a loss, or simply wasted.
There's another option. Create consumers that are flexible by design.
Consumers that can switch on when electricity is abundant and switch off when households and businesses need priority.
That's exactly the kind of demand modern electricity systems increasingly require.
Bitcoin mining happens to fit that description remarkably well. Because it's location-independent, interruptible and able to consume energy precisely when it's cheapest and most abundant.
The same logic applies to AI data centres, hydrogen production, desalination and other flexible industrial processes.
The question isn't: "How do we produce more electricity?" It's increasingly: "How do we consume surplus electricity intelligently?"
Because every excess megawatt that's transformed into economic value is one less megawatt exported at a negative price.
The energy transition is about building smarter demand. And perhaps that's one of the most misunderstood opportunities blockchain has quietly been pointing towards for years. 🧡
