Accra Is Under Water — And It Affected Me Too

The rain came down hard. Accra is paying for it. And honestly? It hit me personally too.
I was supposed to go home from lectures yesterday. Couldn't. Roads were blocked. Water everywhere. I had to stay put and figure out how to survive the rest of the day.
I also couldn't learn. No studying. No progress on what I had planned.

President Mahama said about 140 millimetres of rain fell in a single day,the highest in years . At least 13 people have died, with more than 470 rescued .
The Ghana National Fire Service is still working. The death toll may rise .
GRIDCo and ECG have temporarily shut down power in parts of the capital because the flooding affected substations .
Some people are trapped at home. Some have lost everything.
And some of us like me couldn't even get home from school.

It's not just the rain. It's a combination of things :
1. Climate change rainfall has increased year by year. In June 2024, Accra recorded about 85mm. In 2025, it was 172mm. In 2026, it hit 333mm . 2. Poor drainage gutters are clogged. Drains are blocked. 3. Illegal buildings people have built on waterways, blocking the natural flow of water . 4. Rapid urban growth Accra is growing fast. But the city's infrastructure is not keeping up .
President Mahama said it plainly: "The irresponsible actions of a few individuals end up putting entire communities at risk" .

Yesterday, I couldn't go home. I couldn't learn. I couldn't do the things I planned.
It's easy to feel stuck when things like this happen. But it also makes you think how many people are going through worse? How many lost their homes, their belongings, their loved ones?
I'm lucky to still have a place to stay and food to eat. But not everyone can say that today.
Flooding isn't just a Ghana problem it happens all over the world. In the US, hurricanes flood cities. In Europe, rivers burst their banks. In Asia, monsoon rains wash away homes. No matter where you are, water doesn't ask for permission.
