I titled it "Tophane Heritage" because the Greeks left such a beautiful and clean neighborhood for the people of Alanya; the residents of the Tophane neighborhood, surrounded by walls and under protection, live in secluded houses with sea views. The houses, streets, and historical buildings of this neighborhood, overlooking the sea, draw us into a different story with every step. It's as if time has stopped here, and the structures reflecting the past have survived to the present, trying to keep the traces of time alive in today's streets.

We spent our last summer trip in Alanya. Every time I visit Alanya, I experience a different feeling and a different excitement. This place truly fascinates me. Let me tell you where we were touring. We were touring a settlement located between the Taurus Mountains and the magnificent, shimmering blue of the Mediterranean. Alanya, a district of Antalya, is one of the most preferred and visited port cities in the Mediterranean among coastal districts, thanks to its nature, history, and the cultural heritage it has left us. In Alanya, which has hosted different civilizations, there is a historical legacy left to us in every corner. Kızılkule (Red Tower), Alanya Castle, the Shipyard, and the Arsenal are just a few of the works left to us from different periods.

Farklı medeniyetlerin ev sahipliği yaptığı Alanya'da her köşe bucakta bize bırakılan tarihi bir miras yer alıyor. Kızılkule, Alanya Kalesi, Tersane ve Tophane hepsi farklı dönemlerden bizlere bırakılan eserlerden sadece birkaçıdır.
I would like to tell you about these historical heritages here, especially the Tophane neighborhood. There are many buildings and artifacts from the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman periods in this neighborhood. The neighborhood is surrounded by Alanya Castle and appears to be under protection. The neighborhood is inside the castle and is built on a hillside overlooking the sea. Almost all of the two- and three-storey wooden houses, most of which are said to have been built by Greeks, have sea views. The families living here have converted some of these houses into hostels and businesses. While we were visiting this place, we stayed in a hostel in one of these houses built by the Greeks. During our stay here, we had the opportunity to examine the entire surroundings and structures of the neighborhood.
>Burada yer alan bu tarihi miraslardan ben sizlere özellikle Tophane mahallesinden bahsetmek istiyorum. Bu mahallede Helenestik, Roma, Bizans, Selçuklu ve Osmanlı dönemlerine ait birçok yapı ve eserler yer alıyor. Mahalle, Alanya Kalesi ile etrafı çevrilmiş ve koruma altında görünüyor. Mahalle, kalenin içinde olup, denizi tam karşıdan gören yamaç bir tepede kurulmuş. İki ve üç kattan oluşan çoğunluğunun Rumlar tarafından yapıldığı söylenen ahşap evlerin hemen hemen hepsi deniz manzaralıdır. Burada yaşayan aileler, bu evlerin bazılarını pansiyon ve işletmeye çevirmişler. Biz de burayı gezerken Rumların yaptırdığı bu evlerin birinde pansiyonda kalmıştık. Burada kaldığımız süre boyunca mahalenin tüm etrafını ve yapılarını inceleme fırsatını yakaladık.
As we explore the neighborhood, we constantly ascend through narrow streets. Even the old, speckled stones paving these narrow streets create a nostalgic atmosphere. The green grass and plants clinging tightly to the houses and stones make the scenery even more appealing. With grass sprouting from between the stones, dried leaves scattered on the ground, and trees whose branches reach the doors and windows of the houses, the neighborhood has a truly nostalgic feel. Some houses are empty and closed off. Others have been decorated without damaging their historical structure. But the most beautiful views are the magnificent sea views visible from between the walls of Alanya Castle as we ascend. The shimmering blue sea between two stones and the ships sailing on it make the view so captivating that one cannot tear their eyes away. And the colorful flowers hanging in the air between the stones in the streets look very beautiful and aesthetic.
>Mahalleyi gezerken sürekli dar sokaklardan yukarı doğru ilerliyoruz. Bu dar sokaklarda yerlere döşenen eski benekli taşlar bile nostaljik bir hava görüntüsü yaratmış. Evlere ve taşlara sıkı sıkı sarılmış olan yeşil otlar ve bitkiler gördüğümüz manzarayı daha da çekici hale getiriyor. Taşların arasından fırlayan otlar, yere dökülen kurumuş yapraklar ve dalları evlerin kapısına ve penceresine uzanan ağaçlarla mahalle tam bir nostaljik hava görünümünde duruyor. Bazı evler boş ve kapatılmış. Bazıları ise, tarihi yapısına zarar verilmeden dekore edilmiş. Ama en güzel manzaralar yukarı çıkarken Alanya Kalesi surlarının arasından görünen o muhteşem deniz manzarasıdır. İki taşın arasında parlayan masmavi deniz ve üstünde gezinen gemiler manzarayı o kadar çekici hale getiriyor ki; insan gözlerini bir an olsun ayıramıyor. Birde sokak aralarında taşlarda havada asılı kalan rengarenk çiçekler çok güzel ve estetik görünüyor.
Within the neighborhood, alongside castle walls, passageways, and historical churches, there are also mosques and prayer halls where Muslims worshipped during that period. These mosques and prayer halls are still in use today. Considering the diverse civilizations that inhabited the neighborhood, it demonstrates the beautiful harmony of tolerance and courtesy. It is said that the neighborhood's most magnificent and glorious period was during the reign of the Anatolian Seljuk Sultan Alaaddin Keykubat. Historical structures and artifacts such as the Kızılkule (Red Tower), the shipyard, and the arsenal were built during Sultan Alaaddin Keykubat's time. Around the shipyard and Kızılkule, there is a separate section dedicated to the Maritime and Ship Project, which has been transformed into a museum. Here, some boats used in the past and their construction phases are displayed.
>Mahallenin içinde kale surları, geçitler ve tarihi kiliselerinin yanı sıra o dönemdeki müslümanların ibadet ettitleri mescit ve camiler de yer alıyor. Bu mescit ve camiler günümüzde de hala kullanılıyor. Mahalleye baktığımızda farklı medeniyetleri barındırdığını düşünürsek, hoşgörü ve nezaketin burada ne kadar güzel işlediğini gösteriyor. Mahallenin en ihtişamlı ve en parlak döneminin Anadolu Selçuklu Sultanı Alaaddin Keykubat zamanında yaşanmış olduğunu söyleniyor. Kızılkule, Tersane ve Tophane gibi tarihi yapılar ve eserler Sultan Alaaddin Keykubat zamanında yapılmış. Tersane ve Kızılkule çevresinde Denizcilik ve Gemi Projesi adı altında yürütülen ve müze haline getirilmiş ayrı bir bölüm var. Burada gemicilik ve denizcilikle ilgili geçmişte kullanılmış bazı tekneler ve onların yapım aşamaları gösteriliyor.
Buildings in the neighborhood that were damaged in previous years have been restored with the contributions of Alanya and Antalya Municipalities. During these restoration efforts, care was taken to avoid damaging the historical fabric. The houses within the neighborhood have been given a historical and touristic character under the name "Alanya Houses." The fact that most of the houses, built on a rather sloping terrain, overlook the sea is also highlighted as a unique feature. These houses have another interesting characteristic. As we walked through the streets, we saw historical water cisterns in the gardens of the houses. We learned from the business owners who operate shops in the area that because there is no natural water source, each house has its own water cistern.

Mahallenin içinde yer alan evler, Alanya evleri adı altında tarihsel ve turistlik bir özellik kazandırılmış. Odukça eğimli bir arazide kurulan evlerin çoğunun denize bakıyor olması da ayrı bir özellik olarak tanıtılıyor. Bu evlerin ilginç bir özelliği daha bulunuyor. Gezdiğimiz sokak aralarında evlerin bahçelerinde tarihi su sarnıçlarının olduklarını gördük. Bunun nedeni, doğal su kaynağının bulunmaması nedeniyle her evin kendisine ait su sarnının olduğunu buralarda esnaflık yapan işletme sahiplerinden öğreniyoruz.
Tophane neighborhood was one of Alanya's first settlements. Initially, Greeks lived here. This neighborhood truly breathes history. The structures built in the past still stand intact. In particular, the Kızılkule, Tershane, and Tophane houses have managed to survive to the present day with their original architecture intact. As time progressed, Turks and Greeks lived together in this neighborhood. There are numerous cisterns in front of every house within the neighborhood. Besides the historical structures that make the neighborhood valuable, there is also a long beach made of stone and sand right below the castle. While swimming in the sea, people have the chance to see Alanya Castle, the shipyard, and the maritime museum. We swam at this beach. If you look back a little further out, you can see Alanya Castle, and if you turn your head slightly, you can see the magnificent shipyard built right by the sea.
>Tophane mahallesi Alanya'nın ilk yerleşim merkezlerinden biri olmuş. Burada ilk olarak Rumlar yaşamış. Bu mahalle gerçekten de tarih kokuyor. Geçmişte inşa edilen yapılar hala sapasağlam duruyor. Özellikle Kızılkule, Tershane ve Tophane evleri dokuları hiç bozulmadan günümüze kadar gelmeyi başarmışlar. Zaman ilerledikçe Türkler ve Rumlar bu mahallede birlikte yaşamışlar. Mahallenin içinde her evin önündeki sarnıçların sayısı oldukça fazladır. Mahalleyi değerli yapan tarihi yapıların yanı sıra kalenin hemen altında taş ve kumlardan oluşan uzun bir plajı da var. Plajda insanlar denize girerken, Alanya kalesini, tershaneyi ve gemicilik müzesini de görme şansını elde ediyorlar. Bu plajda denize girmiştik. Denizden biraz açılında arkanıza baktığınızda Alanya Kalesini, hafif başınızı çevirdiğinizde denizin kenarında yapılmış o muhteşem tershaneyi de görebiliyorsunuz.
The Tophane neighborhood seems a bit quieter and more peaceful compared to the center of Alanya. Because the neighborhood is built on a slightly sloping terrain, the air is cooler and cleaner. There's no concrete jungle. Historic stone houses and narrow streets make the neighborhood unique. While sipping tea on a balcony, you feel a longing for the past. We stayed in a family guesthouse here. Mr. Hasan bought the two-story stone house, which belonged to the Greeks, and converted it into a guesthouse. We sipped our tea while sitting on the balcony on the second floor, looking at the sea and the historic buildings. Our two-day holiday trip was peaceful and enjoyable. >Tophane mahallesi, Alanya'nın merkezine göre biraz daha sakin ve huzurlu görünüyor. Mahalle hafif eğik bir arazinin üstüne kurulu olduğu için, havası da serin ve daha temiz. Beton yığını görüntüsü yok. Tarihi taş evler ve dar sokaklar mahalleyi farklı kılıyor. Bir balkonda çay içerken geçmişe dair özlem duyuyorsunuz. Biz burada bir aile pansiyonunda kaldık. Hasan bey zamanında Rumlardan kalan iki katlı taş evi satın almış ve burayı bir pansiyona çevirmiş. İkinci katında balkonda otururken, denize ve tarihi yapılara bakarak çayımızı yudumluyorduk. This trip to Alanya, a holiday destination we visit every year, has shown us once again that, despite the city center being bustling and crowded, the Tophane neighborhood, with its peaceful and tranquil atmosphere, narrow streets, and historic stone houses, allows you to experience the past right in the heart of the city. Here, you feel like you're not in the middle of Alanya, but rather wandering through an old neighborhood from the past. Until we meet again on our next trip, with love...
