A Bike Ride Along the Kosi River, Uttarakhand towards Nanitaal

Some of the best rides are the ones where you don't have to rush towards the destination. You simply get on the bike, follow the road and let the landscape change around you. One such ride took me through the beautiful countryside of Uttarakhand, following the Kosi River as I made my way towards Nainital. The ride began on the quieter roads of the Kumaon region, with the Kosi River flowing alongside the route. The morning was calm, the air was cool and the mountains were still covered in a soft layer of mist. It was one of those mornings when riding felt more enjoyable than reaching the destination.
As I continued towards Nainital, the road kept winding through the mountains. The Kosi appeared and disappeared beside the road, sometimes flowing close to the valley and sometimes hidden behind trees and bends. The sound of the water was a constant companion whenever the road came close to the river. The landscape was a mix of forests, hillsides, small villages and open valleys. Unlike the busier tourist routes, some sections of this road felt surprisingly peaceful. There were long stretches where the only things around were the motorcycle, the mountains and the river.
I kept stopping along the way. Sometimes it was because of a particularly beautiful view, and sometimes there was no real reason at all. A quiet stretch of road, a clear view of the river or sunlight falling across the mountains was enough to make me pull over. One of the best things about travelling towards Nainital by bike is watching the landscape gradually change. The further you move into the Kumaon hills, the more the roads begin to climb and the forests become thicker. The bends become tighter, and suddenly you're surrounded by tall trees with glimpses of distant mountains between them.
The Kosi River itself made the journey feel different from an ordinary mountain ride. Instead of simply riding through the hills, there was always something moving alongside the road. In some places, the river flowed gently over rocks, while in others it became faster and louder as it passed through narrower sections of the valley. I eventually stopped near the river for a short break. I parked the bike, walked down towards the water and sat there for a while. The mountains rose around the valley, and the sound of the flowing river made the whole place feel completely removed from the outside world.
After the break, I got back on the bike and continued towards Nainital. The road became more interesting as the elevation increased. Every corner seemed to open up into another view, and the changing light made the mountains look different from one turn to the next. There were small villages along the way where life seemed to move at a much slower pace. A few houses, small roadside shops and people going about their daily routine were scattered along the mountain slopes. These ordinary scenes often become some of the most memorable parts of a road trip.
As the afternoon progressed, clouds began gathering over the mountains. The weather changed quickly, giving the landscape a completely different mood. The distant hills started disappearing behind the clouds, while the forest around the road became darker and cooler. Riding through this kind of weather is one of the things I enjoy most about the Himalayas. You never know what the next few kilometres will look like. Clear skies can turn into mist, sunshine can disappear behind clouds, and a completely ordinary road can suddenly become incredibly atmospheric. Eventually, the road continued climbing towards Nainital. The surroundings became busier as I got closer to the popular hill station, but I kept thinking about the quieter sections of the journey the river by the side of the valley, the empty roads, the forests and the small villages along the way.
For me, the best part of this ride wasn't reaching Nainital. It was everything that happened before reaching there. The Kosi River, the winding roads, the mountain air, the unexpected stops and the changing scenery made the journey feel much more memorable than simply driving from one destination to another.
The Evening Traffic around.
The Lake.
There is something special about travelling through Uttarakhand on a motorcycle. You are close enough to the landscape to notice the small details. You can stop whenever you want, take a different road, walk down towards a river or simply sit beside the road and watch the mountains.
By the Side.
>And as I continued towards Nainital, I realised once again that the best mountain journeys aren't always about where you are going.
So that's all for today guys, I hope you liked it. Thanks for your precious time. 🙏 Love from the Himalayas. ❤️
