For the past few weeks, I've been sharing a couple of experiences I had participating in the restoration of several of the nation's cultural heritage sites, focusing on the visual arts, which is my professional area of expertise. Desde hace unas semanas atrás he estado compartiendo un par de experiencias que tuve participando en la restauración de varios patrimonios culturales de la nación desde la parte de artes plásticas que es el área profesional que manejo. On this occasion we went to the General Cemetery of the South in the city of Caracas, Venezuela, to participate in the restoration of a mausoleum, but not just any mausoleum, but the most imposing architectural structure in the entire cemetery, the mausoleum of General Joaquin Crespo, a Venezuelan leader who among many other things he did was president of the nation on two occasions and was also a Freemason. En esta oportunidad nos fuimos hasta el cementerio general del Sur en la ciudad de Caracas, Venezuela, para participar en la restauración de un mausoleo, pero no uno cualquiera, sino la estructura arquitectónica más imponente de todo el cementerio, El mausoleo del General Joaquin Crespo, un caudillo venezolano que entre tantas cosas que hiso fue presidente de la nación en dos ocasiones y también era masón.
When they contacted me to offer me the opportunity to participate in the restoration, I had to decline, since I am a student and had just enrolled in 9 subjects for that semester. I want to finish university as soon as possible, so I prioritized my studies over the job they were offering me. But since these people already know that I am committed to my work and deliver quality results, they gave me the opportunity to work with them only on the days I didn't have classes, which were the weekends starting on Friday. Cuando me contactaron para ofrecerme la oportunidad de participar en la restauración, tuve que negarme, ya que estoy estudiando y acababa de inscribir 9 materias para ese semestre en curso, quiero culminar la universidad lo más pronto posible por eso priorice los estudios antes que el trabajo que me estaban ofreciendo; pero como esas personas ya conocen que soy comprometido con el trabajo y doy resultados de calidad, me dieron la oportunidad de que aceptara trabajar con ellos solo los días que no tenía clases, que eran los fines de semana desde el viernes.

My work in this restoration would continue to be from the perspective of the visual arts; there are several sculptures that need maintenance and restoration, and internally the structure of the mausoleum has some very interesting paintings that also require some minor touch-ups; but in order for me to begin these tasks, the other workers who are carrying out the masonry restorations need to make progress in their area. Mi labor en esta restauración seguiría siendo desde la parte de las artes plásticas, hay varias esculturas que hay que realizarle un mantenimiento y restauración e internamente la estructura del mausoleo tiene unas pinturas muy interesantes que también requieren de algunos detallitos en la pintura; pero para poder comenzar a realizar esas labores de mi parte, los demás trabajadores que están realizando las restauraciones de albañilería tiene que avanzar en su área.

To earn some money while I wait for my turn to do the work I was asked to do, I started helping out a bit with the masonry restoration work, carrying materials, cleaning up debris, doing a little bit of everything for about a month and a half that it took us to advance to the point where the restoration of the art pieces could begin. Para ganarme un dinero mientras espero que me toque hacer la labor por la que fui solicitado, me puse a ayudar un poco en las labores de restauración de albañilería, cargue materiales, limpie escombros, hice de todo un poco durante un mes y medio más o menos que nos tardamos en avanzar hasta el punto de que comiencen las restauraciones de las piezas de arte.

The remains of Joaquín Crespo do not rest in this mausoleum, as he is considered a national hero and is buried in the National Pantheon alongside the remains of other national heroes. Only the remains of his family are interred here. I mentioned earlier that General Crespo was a Freemason, as the mausoleum contains much Masonic symbolism in its structure and ornamentation. We had the opportunity to have a historian visit the mausoleum every Saturday to share interesting information about the history of this imposing structure. En este mausoleo no descansan los restos de Joaquin Crespo ya que como es considerado un prócer de la nación está en el panteón nacional junto a los restos de los demás proceres, aquí solo están restos de familiares. Al principio destaque que el general Crespo fue masón, ya que el mausoleo tiene mucha simbología masónica en su estructura y ornamenta. Tuvimos la oportunidad de tener un historiador que asistía al mausoleo todos los sábados para darnos información interesante sobre la historia de ese imponente mausoleo.

The time has come to begin my work, but I won't be doing it alone. I'll be collaborating with some artists from the city of Maracaibo, Zulia state. I met them during the church restoration, but now I'll be working closely with them to restore the artworks that adorn the area surrounding the main structure of the mausoleum. First, we'll tackle the three winged sculptures that are separate from the central structure. Llego el momento de comenzar con mi labor, pero no realizaría esa labor solo, trabajaría en colaboración de unos artistas de la ciudad de Maracaibo, estado Zulia, yo los conocí en la restauración de la iglesia, pero ahora voy a colaborar de la mano con ellos para restaurar las piezas de artes que adornan los alrededores de la estructura principal del mausoleo. Primero abordamos las tres esculturas aladas que son independientes de la estructura principal central.

All these sculptures, which I will present in photographs, represent different symbolic virtues that add energetic charge to this mausoleum and to the ascension of General Crespo's spirit. There should be seven, but only six are present (apparently one never arrived from the mausoleum's construction). There should be four at the cardinal points, but only three: Truth, Wisdom, and Love. These were the first ones we restored. Then there are two more incorporated into the main structure of the mausoleum, on the east side of the building, receiving the rising sun. Todas estas esculturas que les presentare en fotografías representan diferentes virtudes simbólicas que se le agrega como carga energética a este mausoleo y a la ascensión del espíritu del general Crespo; Deberían ser 7, pero solo hay 6 presentes, (al parecer una nunca llego desde la construcción del mausoleo) en los puntos cardinales deberían de haber 4, pero solo hay tres, (La Verdad, La sabiduría, El Amor) esas fueron las primeras que restauramos. Luego están 2 más incorporadas a la estructura principal del mausoleo, están en la cara Este de la edificación recibiendo el sol naciente.

The last and most imposing of the virtues is the Winged Victory, located at the very top of the mausoleum's dome. It's worth noting that the previous sculptures are made of limestone or concrete, while this last one is a solid piece cast in copper, brought from France. This final sculpture and the rest of the mausoleum's restoration were not completed because on June 24, 2026, a devastating earthquake struck Venezuela, completely changing the lives of all Venezuelans. La última y más imponente de las virtudes, es la Victoria alada, que se encuentra ubicada en lo más alto de la cúpula del mausoleo, Cabe destacar que las anteriores esculturas están realizadas en piedra caliza o concreto y esta última es una pieza solida fundida de cobre, traída desde Francia. Esta última escultura y el resto de la restauración del mausoleo no se culminó, debido a que el pasado 24 de junio del presente año 2026 en Venezuela ocurrió un evento sísmico devastador que cambió por completo la vida de todos los venezolanos.
I've been working on these restoration projects of the nation's cultural heritage sites under contract with a government agency. After the double earthquake, all the projects this government agency was undertaking were halted, and all personnel were transferred to respond to the emergency call in the neighboring state of La Guaira, where the natural disaster was even more devastating. They asked me if I wanted to help, and without hesitation, I accepted the opportunity. I'll be sharing my post-earthquake experiences soon. Good vibes. Estos trabajos de restauración de patrimonios culturales de la nación los he estado realizando contratado por una entidad del estado; con lo ocurrido por el doblete sísmico todas las obras que estaba realizando esta entidad gubernamental se detuvieron, y todo el personal fue trasladado para acudir al llamado de emergencia en el estado vecino de la Guaira donde el desastre natural fue más devastador. A mí me preguntaron si quería apoyar y sin dudarlo acepte vivir esa experiencia, pronto estaré compartiendo mis vivencias post terremoto, buenas vibras.
