A Shanghai-based Chinese company called AheadForm develops highly realistic biomimetic robots; a prime example of this technology is the Origin F1, a robotic platform created for research involving embodied artificial intelligence and human-machine interaction. Rather than initially focusing development on the legs or heavy-lifting capabilities, the engineers started with the face.

Beneath a flexible silicone skin, dozens of small actuators control various facial regions to replicate movements of the eyes, mouth, cheeks, and other areas responsible for expressions. The Origin F1 employs up to 42 independent micro-actuators to mimic the movements of human facial muscles; however, mechanically replicating a human face is only part of the challenge, and the evolution of the Origin is beginning to extend communication to other parts of the body.

On August 18, 2026, a new demonstration showcased robots equipped with hands featuring fully articulated fingers. In the video, Origin performs both individual and coordinated finger movements and uses its hands to make gestures during interactions—such as waving and pointing—thereby enhancing a platform that previously drew attention primarily for its biomimetic face.

This change adds a new layer of non-verbal communication; after all, humans do not converse solely through words and facial expressions—hand movements, arm positioning, body orientation, and subtle gestures also play a role in how we convey information. AheadForm is aiming to incorporate these elements into its machines.

Other platforms developed by the company take this direction even further. One example is the ELF1 2.0. In this system, the robotic structure was expanded to incorporate a more complete upper body, including a torso and articulated arms. This allows for the combination of facial movements with arm gestures and postural shifts during interaction. The challenge then becomes coordinating all these systems: the robot must identify the person, understand speech, generate a response, and simultaneously translate that response into voice, lip movements, gaze direction, facial expressions, and body gestures.

This development is part of a field known as embodied intelligence, where artificial intelligence systems move beyond existing solely within computers to physically perceive and interact with their environment. Their lineup includes various biomimetic platforms—some with highly realistic human features and others with more stylized designs. For now, machines of this type remain primarily platforms for research, development, and technology demonstrations, but the evolution of AheadForm’s prototypes shows how the company is gradually expanding the concept.

First, their robots gained faces capable of producing micro-expressions. Later, they began combining expressions with vision, language, and conversation. Now, the Origin F1 is also starting to use articulated hands and gestures during interactions, while other company platforms are advancing toward increasingly complete body structures. So, tell me: what do you think the next step for these machines will be?

Sorry for my Ingles, it's not my main language. The images were taken from the sources used or were created with artificial intelligence
