Terapia de Esquemas (#2) Dominio de la Desconexión y Rechazo 🇪🇸 ထ 🇺🇸 Schema Therapy (#2): Disconnection and Rejection Domain

In the first article , I talked about why we keep repeating the same painful patterns even when we rationally know they are hurting us. I explained that these patterns have a name—schemas—and that they are organized into five groups, or domains, according to which childhood emotional need went unmet. This article focuses on the first of them: the Disconnection and Rejection domain.
Within this domain, I recognize several schemas that I experience myself. Studying them instead of simply living with them while thinking, "that's just who I am," has been uncomfortable. Still, I mention it because many of these patterns can be recognized in everyday life.
Necesidad no cubierta
The Unmet Need
As we saw, Jeffrey Young grouped eighteen patterns into five domains according to the childhood need that went unmet. The first domain relates to a fairly basic need: feeling safe, stable, cared for, understood, and accepted by the people we depended on.
When that need is not met consistently, we do not simply learn that "this particular person was unavailable to me." Instead, we learn something broader and much harder to undo: that connection itself is not safe. That getting close to someone means that sooner or later, they will leave, hurt, or reject you.
The origins of this domain often involve unstable, emotionally cold, abusive, rejecting, or socially isolated family environments. There does not have to be a single, obvious traumatic event. Sometimes years of unpredictable emotional availability are enough—for example, a caregiver who is present on some days and absent on others, without the child being able to predict which will be which—for a child to learn, at a deep level, what to expect from the people closest to them. Inconsistent or unreliable availability can contribute to the development of insecure attachment patterns.
The Five Schemas in This Domain
There are five schemas within this domain. It is common for more than one to be active at the same time, and they often reinforce one another, as we will see later.
Abandono/Inestabilidad
Abandonment/Instability
The core belief is that important people will not be reliably available because they will leave, let you down, become unpredictable, or disappear. It is a background expectation that can become activated even when there is no real evidence.
For example, someone goes on a first date that goes well. Yet for the next 48 hours, they check their phone every fifteen minutes because part of them is already waiting for the message saying that this is not going to work out. When the other person takes longer than usual to reply, the conclusion is: "they're already starting to pull away."
Desconfianza/Abuso
Mistrust/Abuse
Here, the expectation is that other people will hurt, manipulate, humiliate, or take advantage of you, leading you to anticipate harm or abuse even when the signals are ambiguous.
For example, a coworker makes a positive comment about a project, but instead of simply taking it as praise, the first reaction is to wonder what that person wants, what they expect in return, or how they might later use it against you. Accepting the compliment without suspicion requires a conscious effort—one that someone without this schema would not even need to make.
Emotional Deprivation
The core belief is that no one will adequately meet one's needs for care, understanding, or emotional protection. It is often divided into three forms—deprivation of affection, empathy, or protection—but the outcome is similar.
For example, someone is going through a difficult week and, when a friend asks how they are doing, they reply, "Fine, just a little tired," and change the subject. It is not necessarily because they do not trust that friend, but because part of them decided long ago that even if they told the truth, no one would respond in a way that would genuinely help. Asking for help no longer feels like an option.
Defectiveness/Shame
The core belief is that, in some essential way, you are unacceptable, defective, or unworthy of love—not as an opinion, but as a fact about who you are. This often creates a constant expectation of rejection if that supposed flaw is ever noticed.
For example, someone receives recognition for doing a job well and, instead of enjoying it, thinks that if the person who praised them really knew them, they would not say the same thing. This can lead someone to deliberately avoid closeness, end relationships, or pull away before the other person has the chance to discover the flaw they already assume is there.
Social Isolation/Alienation
The central feeling is one of being fundamentally different from everyone else, of not belonging to any group, of being an outsider even while physically present.
For example, someone occasionally attends gatherings with a group of friends they have known for years, takes part in the conversations, and even genuinely enjoys laughing with them at times. Yet when they return home, they are left with the feeling that they spent more time observing the gathering than truly participating in it, that they do not fit into a space where, in theory, they fit perfectly well.
