For people who live in mountainous areas, working as farmers may already be a part of their daily lives. Likewise, for people who live in coastal areas, some of them are certainly already accustomed to life as fishermen. I find this kind of thing quite interesting to discuss, because it is also closely related to an experience that I am going to share here, which was when I visited a fish pond owned by my friend, located in the coastal area of the city, specifically around Ujong Blang Village, Bireuen.
The first thing I immediately felt as soon as I arrived around this fish pond area was a sense of tranquility, with a beautiful view clearly stretching out before my eyes. However, as I walked further, I could also see and understand that this place is one of the sources of income for the local community.
Around this area, there are hundreds of large fish ponds, and almost all of them are still active. They are filled with various aquatic creatures, depending on what is being cultivated. These ponds contain saltwater sourced directly from the sea. When the sea tide is high, the water in the river also rises, and this becomes an opportunity for the fishermen to channel the water into their ponds.
However, around these fish ponds, many fishermen choose to cultivate shrimp, milkfish, and crabs. The most complicated part, however, is cultivating shrimp because the process and the risks are quite high, while the easiest one is cultivating crabs.
A fish pond stocked with Vannamei shrimp cannot simply be left unattended; the shrimp must be properly cared for and closely monitored with great attention. One of the fishermen even once told me, “Taking care of Vannamei shrimp requires your whole heart, just like taking care of and raising your own children.” It takes enough experience and knowledge if we want to cultivate these shrimp, because there are many things that need to be taken into consideration, starting from choosing high-quality shrimp seed, managing the water quality of the pond, providing regular feed, maintaining oxygen levels, all the way to the complicated harvesting process.
However, something that is difficult to do does not mean it is impossible.
I am someone who grew up in a rural area near the mountains, so having a new experience and learning something like this was definitely quite surprising for me. I spent about five hours at my friend's fish pond, and that alone was enough to make me think really hard and even give me a headache lol.
It was definitely not a waste of time visiting this fish pond. Besides gaining a lot of new experiences, I also got to enjoy as much grilled crab as I wanted. And just as it started to get dark, I decided to immediately begin my journey home.
