Eli was a servant of God who failed to live a worthy life and neglected to instruct his children to follow God’s ways; God decided to end his family’s service at the altar.
1 SAMUEL 2: 30 Wherefore the LORD God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever: but now the LORD saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed.
This demonstrates God’s unhappiness with Eli for failing to raise a family that would honor Him and carry His glory forward. Eli’s sons despised God and lightly esteemed His name and character. Seeing nothing to transmit on to the next generation, God chose to terminate that line of service.
The Christian life can be made similar to a relay race, where correctly handing over the baton is essential. Each generation has the responsibility to transmit God’s purposes to the other. God’s purposes are forever but human agents have limited time. When a generation fails to pass on the baton, God is unhappy.
Effective generational transfer can be achieved through making Christ-like disciples. The universe suffers when parents fail to disciple their children. As believers, we must raise children to follow Christ, instilling purpose, values and responsibility, not just focusing on the benefits of the gospel.
