Disqualify the Age, Not the Expert: Once A 17 Year Old ESL Teacher

Your enthusiastic author, @rufajane, is back with another chapter of her life to share. Today, I want to tell you about my journey as an ESL teacher not to boast about my achievements, but to encourage those who may be doubting their own potential.

I was accepted into an ESL company when I was only 17 years old. Yes, you read that correctly. At an age when most people were focused solely on school, I was already stepping into the professional world.
Many people were surprised when they learned about it. Some even questioned how I managed to get hired despite being underage. After all, many companies have age requirements and legal restrictions for employment.
To this day, I consider it one of God's greatest blessings in my life.

What many people do not realize is that ESL companies often focus less on age and more on communication skills, confidence, teaching ability, and more about the value you bring to the table. During my interview, I spoke with conviction and demonstrated my passion for teaching. The interviewers evaluated my performance, my fluency in English, and my ability to connect with students.
Only later did they discover that I was just 17 years old.
At that point, they had a decision to make. They could have rejected me because of my age, or they could have looked beyond the number and evaluate the skills I brought to the table.
Thankfully, they chose the latter.

After reviewing my interview and demonstration class, they decided to give me an opportunity. They recognized that while age can indicate experience, it does not always determine capability. What truly mattered was my willingness to learn, my ability to teach, and my commitment to doing the job well.

That experience taught me a lesson I will never forget: Never allow people to define your limits before you have the chance to prove yourself.
As you can see, many young people are underestimated simply because of their age. Society often assumes that youth means inexperience, immaturity, or incompetence. But talent, dedication, and excellence do not wait for a certain birthday. Age may tell people how long you have lived, but it does not always tell them what you are capable of accomplishing.

And you know what? At that time, I was still a first year Senior High School (Grade 11) student in the Science strand, balancing school responsibilities while teaching students from another country. It was far from easy. There were days when I felt exhausted, overwhelmed, and challenged by the responsibilities on my shoulders.
Yet I continued. Because I understood something important: there is no easy path to growth. Every worthwhile achievement requires effort. Every opportunity demands responsibility. Every dream asks for commitment.
Instead of seeing challenges as obstacles, I chose to see them as opportunities to become stronger, wiser, and more disciplined. Now of legal age (now legally recognized as an adult), I look back at how I managed to juggle work and school at only 17. I am grateful for every challenge, every lesson, and every opportunity. And if there is one message I want you to take from my story, it is this: Please do not underestimate yourself.
Do not allow fear, age, background, or other people's opinions to convince you that you are not ready. Be curious enough to explore new opportunities. Be brave enough to try things that seem beyond your reach. Be hardworking enough to turn potential into reality.
Remember, opportunities do not stay in one place forever. They come, they pass, and they reward those who are willing to take a chance on themselves. So while you have the opportunity, learn, grow, work hard, and believe in yourself.
Because sometimes, the biggest thing standing between you and your future is the belief that you are not ready, when in fact, you are far more capable than you realize.
