The value of goals that no one else sees

Generally, we tend to celebrate the major events in our lives—such as a graduation, the completion of a big project, or the purchase of a car or a house, among others—but we don’t celebrate those internal milestones that, even if they’re small, deserve more of our recognition. I’m referring to those invisible achievements that the rest of the world isn’t interested in and that they’ll likely never even know about because they’re personal—those goals that require time, emotional effort, and mental effort. For example, overcoming a fear, cutting back on sugar, waking up early, or learning to say no.

When most of us achieve a personal goal, we don’t celebrate it; instead, we brush it off as if it were nothing special, even if it took us months or years to achieve it. I used to be that kind of person—I’d just brush it off as if it hadn’t required any effort on my part. But some time ago, after reading about this in an Instagram post, I realized that there were many things in the past I should have congratulated myself on. Besides, if I’d cheered myself on at the time, maybe my self-esteem and self-confidence would have been better.

Honestly, looking back, I realize that my belief that I couldn’t do anything right and had nothing to be proud of was a lie, because I achieved major personal goals—like overcoming my shyness—and that wasn’t easy at all. I like these kinds of reflections because I feel that these small changes will make a big difference in my life and will help me make more progress on my path of personal growth, and if it helps me, I hope it helps others as well.

So, let’s break the habit of overlooking an achievement just because we think it’s small or insignificant; let’s congratulate ourselves, say kind things to each other, and celebrate with whatever we can—whether that means treating yourself to something, having a dessert, or whatever else—because you deserve it. We should let go of the idea that we only have to celebrate big goals, because even if you consider what you achieved to be unimportant (or someone else sees it that way), it was something you accomplished—something you made a reality through your own effort. It wasn’t something that just happened without you lifting a finger. Besides, it’s a personal matter, so it doesn’t matter how embarrassing it might be—it’s nobody’s business but our own.

Doing that will motivate us and make us feel better about ourselves—it will even lift our spirits. I say this because it made me feel better, more motivated, and happier. These are the moments when you realize that you don’t need the whole world to know you’ve achieved a goal in order to feel happy.

Celebrating small achievements isn't silly or unimportant; it's a way of recognizing that what we do matters and has a significant impact on our lives. We don't need to achieve a big goal to feel proud; we just need to acknowledge the effort we put in every day and everything we accomplish, even if it isn't huge. We only have one life, and it's very short, so let's really enjoy the journey.
