El arte de acompañar en silencio: Cuando el apoyo no necesita empujar | The Art of Silent Companionship: When Support Doesn't Need to Push

When I was little, I was extremely shy—so much so that I couldn’t look anyone in the face because I was embarrassed; so doing anything that involved interacting with others was really hard for me. Even so, I wanted to be “a normal girl,” so I tried hard to be more socially active, but my parents constantly forced me to do all kinds of activities I didn’t want to do, and that had the opposite effect. I especially remember when I mentioned that I was thinking about singing at school because by then I was getting along better with others, though not well enough to stand in front of an audience.

A few weeks after I made that comment, the music teacher called me in to practice a song he’d chosen because I was going to perform at a school event. I panicked; I didn’t know what was going on until they told me my mom had spoken to the teacher to let him know I was going to sing, and they ended up sorting everything out. That was pretty frustrating and scary because, even though it was something I wanted and had set as a goal, I wasn’t ready yet. In the end, the day came and I sang while looking at the floor, but my teachers were proud of me, so it wasn’t so bad.

What I'm getting at with all this is that I didn't need to be pushed into doing something; I needed support in my personal growth process. Although that experience helped me a little with my shyness, it wasn't necessary to go to such extremes—cheering me on and lifting my spirits would have been enough, because a person needs to grow on their own and make their own decisions, even if that leads to stumbling. Besides, that could have had negative consequences, like stage fright, for example.

I know it wasn’t done with bad intentions; it just wasn’t what I needed, since I had other people who were helping me through the process at my own pace, and everything was going perfectly. I’m sure most of you reading this have done something similar or have considered doing so because you care deeply about the other person. The intention is good, but it’s not right to try to “fix” someone else’s life just because we think it’s the right thing to do or for their own good.

Before taking action, it’s best to check in with the other person to see what they think about it or if they’re okay with it. Let’s ask them so we know whether we should just offer encouragement (which is extremely important in any process) or if they actually want our advice or help. Let’s remember to respect the other person’s autonomy, since they have every right to act in their own time and make their own decisions.

For some people, it may be difficult to break the habit of trying to control others’ lives, but overcoming this is also part of the process of personal growth. That is why it is important to learn to offer silent support and only get involved when asked.
