¿Es malo tener secretos? | Is it bad to have secrets?

First of all, I send my warmest regards to all my Venezuelan brothers and sisters who are going through a difficult time right now, and I thank everyone who is helping, both internationally and nationally.
Ever since I was little, I was told that I should never keep a secret because it was wrong to hide things—that doing so automatically made me a dishonest person. That’s why I spent years feeling guilty about hiding certain events in my life. Then, as I grew up, I saw how everyone kept secrets while at the same time scolding me for doing the same thing, so I didn’t have a clear idea of how to deal with it.
Then, over time, I came to understand that there are secrets it’s okay to keep and others that aren’t. As for the ones it’s okay to keep, they’re all those that don’t affect or hurt a third party—and I’m not referring to that fleeting thought that someone’s makeup doesn’t suit them or that the color of their shirt doesn’t match their skin tone, but rather those that cause great harm and conflict. The point is that if we all said everything that crossed our minds, we wouldn’t have any autonomy or be able to develop our own identities; we’d be nothing more than an open book.
Furthermore, absolute transparency isn’t good in relationships; in fact, it can be destructive and even cruel. I think we’ve all felt bad or uncomfortable when someone who doesn’t hold back has made an unnecessary comment. I believe those fleeting thoughts should be kept to oneself as a sign of consideration for the other person.

There are secrets that I consider absolutely necessary based on my own experience, and these are the ones related to personal projects. By this I mean a business venture, the purchase of something big you need, a trip, among other things. The reason I believe it should be kept secret is because there are many malicious people out there (especially those close to you). That’s why it’s best to be discreet—not to hide it from the world, but to share it only with those who need to know. I’ve had many failed projects, mainly because of third parties who made negative comments, deceived me, or scammed me. When something is very important, we need to know exactly who to tell and who not to tell.
Now, as for bad secrets, I mentioned that they are those that harm a third party—such as infidelity, fraud, betrayal, or anything else that violates the rights of others—but there are also those that harm ourselves. By this I mean secrets involving shame or trauma—such as those related to abuse, addiction, or mental illness—which, when kept hidden, end up causing stress and anxiety.
The constant fear of being found out and facing a negative reaction eventually leads people to isolate themselves. It’s not that you have to shout it from the rooftops, but telling the right people would lift that heavy burden off your shoulders; besides, secrets rarely last a lifetime, so it’s better to share them before someone else finds out.
There's nothing wrong with having secrets as long as they don't hurt others or ourselves. The important thing is to know what to say and what not to say, as well as to learn to distinguish who we should tell and who we shouldn't.
