Today’s walk takes us to the iconic Square Bolivar in Cumana, a very busy spot due to its location and because important public institutions—such as the Governor’s Office and the Sucre State Treasury—are situated around this square, along with several foundations.
However, today I want to focus on other places that are also significant, as they have been there for decades and are part of the collective memory. Right across from the statue of Simón Bolivar, the Bar The Oriental, which opened its doors before the Governor’s Office building was constructed; it was therefore curious to see beer and aguardiente being sold late into the night right next to the main local executive office.
But what’s even more striking is that another bar operated very close by, also right in the square: the Sport, which was next to the now-defunct Pichincha movie theater and was very popular with the people of Cumaná because of its atmosphere, with tables and chairs set up under the trees, whereas The Oriental was darker, a traditional bar with jukebox music and colorful lights.
Both establishments went out of business when the square’s renovation began, as foot traffic was restricted during the construction, which lasted nearly three years. The only business that remained open was the Sport bakery, since it was located on a corner and was not affected by the construction barriers. However, it too closed its doors shortly thereafter following the death of its owner.
So Bolivar Square was reopened without the iconic landmarks of a bygone era; even the Jardín Sport is still standing, but it’s now a restaurant that lacks the charm of its predecessor. From the square, you can see the cross located at San Antonio de la Eminencia Castle, another symbol that we hope will stand the test of time.

El paseo de hoy nos lleva a la emblemática plaza Bolívar de Cumaná, un lugar muy transitado por su ubicación y porque alrededor de este espacio se encuentran importantes entes públicos como la Gobernación y la tesorería del estado Sucre, además de varias fundaciones.
Sin embargo, hoy quiero fijar la mirada en otros lugares que también revisten de importancia ya que tienen décadas allí y forman parte de la memoria colectiva, Justamente frente a la estatua de Simón Bolívar llegó a funcionar el Bar El Oriental, que abrió sus puertas antes que se construyera la sede de la Gobernación, por ello resultaba curioso ver que se vendiera cerveza y aguardiente hasta altas horas de la noche al lado del principal despacho ejecutivo local.
Pero llama aún más la atención que muy cerca funcionaba otro bar, también en plena plaza, el Sport que estaba al lado del extinto cine Pichincha y era muy concurrido por los cumaneses debido a su ambiente con mesas y sillas ubicadas bajo los árboles, en tanto El Oriental era más oscuro, de los tradicionales con música de rocola y luces coloridas.
Ambos locales quebraron cuando se inició la remodelación de la plaza ya que la circulación de personas se restringió durante los trabajos, los cuales duraron aproximadamente casi tres años. El único local comercial que siguió funcionando fue la panadería Sport ya que se ubicaba en un esquina y el cerco de seguridad no le afectó. Pero de igual manera cerró sus puertas al poco tiempo tras la desaparición física de su propietario.
Así que la plaza Bolívar fue reinaugurada sin contar con los locales emblemáticos de una época pasada, aún el Jardín Sport está en pie, pero ahora es un restaurante que no posee el encanto de su antecesor. Desde la plaza se puede observar la Cruz ubicada en el Castillo San Antonio de la Eminencia, otro símbolo que ojalá perdure por siempre.
