I had one of those fun little surprises this week when @silverd510 posted the Prospector bar from Mother Lode. For almost nine years on Hive, I honestly thought I was the only one here who had one. Nobody ever showed theirs, and this bar has always felt like one of those pieces that quietly lives in your stack until someone else finally recognizes it. I’ve always picked up vintage silver whenever I happen to come across it. I’m not a hardcore hunter, but when something old, interesting, or beautifully designed shows up, I grab it. The Prospector bar was one of my earliest finds — I got it about six months into stacking, back when everything still felt new and exciting. I treasure it because it’s not something you see often. These bars didn’t survive in large numbers, and the design has always felt personal to me. It’s simple, nostalgic, and very much tied to the era it came from. Come to think of it... I was not born yet when this bar was minted!
It’s a vintage piece from Mother Lode Mint, a private mint active in the early 1970s, mostly between 1972 and 1974. They produced 1‑ounce .999 fine silver art bars with all kinds of themes — historical scenes, mermaids, commemorative designs, and little slices of Americana. A lot of their bars were melted over the decades, so the ones still around usually carry a collector premium. That’s part of what makes them special: they’re not just old, they’re survivors.
