Brown-throated Parakeet (Eupsittula pertinax): A bird that does not deserve to be behind bars (ENG / SPN)

Greetings [Feathered Friends](https://ecency.com/created/hive-106444) community. Today I’ll show you some photos I took a few weeks ago in the area where my husband and I usually go for walks. I took these pictures in the morning, before the sun was at its full brightness. As you can see, they show several small birds resting on nearby power lines. These birds are parakeets—very popular in my country and known as "dirty-faced parakeets" (pericos cara sucia); their scientific name is Eupsittula pertinax.

Estas fotos las tomé de mañana, cuando aún el sol no estaba en todo su esplendor. Y como pueden ver, se trata de varias avecillas descansando en un cableado eléctrico cercano. Estas aves son unos pericos, que en mi país son muy populares y se conocen como pericos cara sucia, siendo su nombre científico es Eupsittula pertinax.

As you can see, these birds were resting—perhaps soaking up some of the weak sunlight filtering through the clouds, (in the last photo of this post, you can see a pigeon that also landed on the wires). Dusky-headed parakeets are very common in the area where I live, but sadly, it is also very common for people to keep them captive in cages, living in solitude and miserable conditions—often for years, as they are relatively long-lived birds. In any case, a bird never deserves to spend even a single day imprisoned behind bars, cut off from nature and deprived of a happy life.

Los pericos cara sucia son muy comunes en el área en donde vivo, pero lamentablemente también es muy común que la gente los tenga cautivos en jaulas, viviendo en soledad y en condiciones miserables, generalmente por varios años, porque son aves relativamente longevas. En todo caso, un ave jamás merece estar siquiera un día presa tras barrotes, alejada de la naturaleza y sin tener una vida feliz.

It is very common to find these birds on my property, especially in the tamarind tree, where they perch to feed on the fruit. They generally travel in flocks—some small, numbering around 10 individuals, and others much larger, with nearly 50. They are social birds and, from what I have read, monogamous, meaning they have a single mate for life. I also learned that they reach maturity after their third year, which implies a long childhood for them. For these reasons, I believe that keeping them confined in cages is an even greater tragedy—a cruel and senseless act.

> En mi solar es muy común que estas aves estén, especialmente en el árbol de tamarindo, en donde se posan a comer sus frutos. Generalmente andan en bandadas, algunas pequeñas, de unos 10 individuos, y otras mucho más grandes, de casi 50. Son aves sociales, y según pude leer, son monógamas, o sea, tienen una sola pareja de por vida. También investigué que alcanzan la madurez luego del tercer año, lo que implica una larga infancia para ellos. Por estas razones pienso, que el tenerlos presos en jaulas, es una tragedia aún mayor, es un acto cruel y sin sentido.

This bird is native to northern Latin America—specifically Venezuela, Colombia, Brazil, and the Netherlands Antilles. These are small parakeets, reaching a maximum length of 20 centimeters; while their plumage is predominantly green, they also feature blue, orange, brown, and yellow feathers, particularly on the upper body. As a fruit-eater, the bird is an excellent seed disperser, contributing to the maintenance of forests and green areas.

> Esta ave es nativa del Norte de América Latina, específicamente de Venezuela, Colombia, Brasil y las Antillas Neerlandesas. Son pericos pequeños, de máximo 20 centímetros de longitud, con un plumaje en su mayor parte verde, pero también tiene plumas azules, anaranjadas, marrones y amarillas, especialmente en la parte superior del cuerpo. Ya que se alimenta de frutas, es un excelente dispersor de semillas, lo que contribuye al mantenimiento de bosques y áreas verdes.
