FungiFriday: Xylaria poitei 2026 (Engl / Spn)

Happy #FungiFriday everyone! The 2026 rainy season is drawing to a close, so the rains are becoming more sporadic and less heavy. Consequently, the fungi are gradually disappearing from my plot—which makes sense, as there is no longer enough moisture for them to reproduce. However, before they vanish completely, I managed to photograph some of them, specifically the species Xylaria poitei .

Esto implica que los hongos vayan desapareciendo progresivamente de mi solar, y es lógico, porque ya no hay la humedad suficiente para reproducirse, sin embargo, antes de que desaparezcan del todo, he podido fotografiar algunos de estos, más específicamente la especie Xylaria poitei .

In posts published in previous years, I have shared photos of this species, which most frequently develops on the remains of fallen tamarind ( Tamarindus indica ) trunks. As a saprophytic fungus, its ecological role is to break down plant matter—feeding on this substrate—which greatly benefits soil health by incorporating microelements and fiber into the soil surface and making them more bioavailable to plants, allowing them to grow stronger and healthier, this is great!
> En posts publicados en años anteriores, he compartido fotos de esta especie, la cual se desarrolla con mayor frecuencia en los restos del tronco caído del tamarindo ( Tamarindus indica ), y esto se debe a que siendo un hongo saprófito, su función a nivel ecológico es degradar los restos vegetales, es decir, se alimenta de este sustrato, lo que es bastante beneficioso para la salud del suelo, ya que incorpora microelementos y fibra a la superficie edáfica, haciéndolas más biodisponibles para las plantas, las cuales crecerán mejor y más fuertes. ¡Esto es genial!

The specimens I found are growing alongside another Xylaria species—specifically Xylaria longipes , which are cylindrical and light brown. The Xylaria poitei specimens, with their irregular, corrugated shape, appear white; I know they have reached maturity because they look as though they are dusted with talcum powder. That “talc” is actually the spores these specimens release into their surroundings to reproduce.
> Los ejemplares que he encontrado crecen al lado de otra especie de Xylaria , más específicamente de la Xylaria longipes , que son los cilíndricos, de color marrón claro. Los de Xylaria poitei , cuya forma es irregular y corrugada se ven blancos, y sé que han llegado a la madurez, porque se observa como si tuviesen talco por encima. Ese “talco” son las esporas que expelen estos especímenes a su alrededor para reproducirse.

The natural progression of this species indicates that as the fungi transition from maturity to decline, they turn gray and black until they cease to exist, disintegrating and merging with their surroundings, thereby completing their entire life cycle.
