When I turned 36, I felt far too old to do things that young people do, and far too young to do things that older people do. My thirties were a wonderful time in my life because I felt healthy and confident; I made the right decisions without giving them too much thought. There were no more relationship issues because, without a boyfriend, there are no issues đ€Łđ .
On my birthday, I woke up for the first time where Iâd always wanted to be: at my favourite spot, the beach. Iâd been wanting to spend it by the sea for ages and a friend helped me make it happen; she and I met at university and our friendship had already lasted over 10 years by then. At that time, another friend of hers ran a guesthouse in ChoronĂ â one of the best beaches in the Caribbean â and she let us stay there, so the two of us went to the beach, along with her eldest daughter.
I had a brilliant time; the village of ChoronĂ has a lighthouse shaped like a ship â itâs beautiful â and visiting it was quite an experience. We spent the whole day at the beach and I revelled in the views and the sound of the waves. We returned in the afternoon; her husband came to pick us up at the townâs bus station, and they decided to take me home. When we arrived, we found my whole family there, including my grandmother and my Aunt Martina, who lived in another house â everyone had gathered to celebrate my 36th birthday.

En esa Ă©poca otra amiga de ella tenĂa una posada en ChoronĂ una de las mejores playas de Caribe y la puso a su disposiciĂłn, asĂ que ambas nos fuimos al mar, junto a su hija mayor.

This was another surprise party organised by my mum; she got everyone together, had the cake made and waited for me to arrive. Apparently, my friends didnât know a thing, but it was very convenient that they dropped me off at home so they could sing âHappy Birthdayâ and eat cake.
Iâve noticed, ever since I started organising my own birthday celebrations, that almost all my cakes are the same colour â pink, blue or purple â it seems to be a constant. My mum made jellies, which is another dessert that goes with the cake.

My granny has been wearing the same dress at my last few birthdays đ„č. My 36-year-old self would never have imagined that, in the future, Iâd be the one looking after all the members of my family, especially my granny â itâs my job to wake her up in the mornings and put her to bed at night. Itâs a responsibility I didnât consciously ask for, but Iâm sure my soul needed to take it on.
Returning to my birthday itself, I came home feeling revitalised by that trip to the beach, marvelling at seeing beautiful new things and feeling a sense of well-being, happy to be surrounded by my family and, on this occasion, by my friend Ana and her husband â though sheâs since had another đ€. that birthday was really lovely and enjoyable; my dadâs the one missing from the photos, but he was the photographer.
