This Sunday will be a very relaxing day for us, one of those days when home becomes the best refuge and there’s no need to seek out another setting to feel at peace. We don’t want to go out because traffic on the island has become absolutely crazy; it seems like everyone decided to hit the same streets at the same time. And as for going to the beach—no way; it’s packed with vacationers taking advantage of the holidays and the Virgin’s feast day to crowd every corner of the sand. We’ll have our chance to enjoy the sea in peace, without rushing and without crowds, when the season winds down and the island returns to its usual rhythm. For now, we prefer to stay home and use these days to get a head start on some pending tasks that are always there, waiting for their turn. This Saturday, when my husband and I woke up, our son had already started applying the first coat of paint to the wall that peeled last week. These are projects we want to finish before the end of the year—small goals we’ve set for ourselves to accomplish step by step, without pressure. Most of the time, our son spends part of the weekend hanging out with his friend, enjoying his youth and his free time, but this Saturday he decided to dedicate part of his morning to helping us out. Whenever he can, he helps us, and he never misses an opportunity to remind us that he’s the youngest in the house—as if that gave him some kind of special responsibility that he’s taken upon himself.
Este domingo será un día muy descansado para nosotros, uno de esos días en los que la casa se convierte en el mejor refugio y no hay necesidad de buscar otro paisaje para sentir tranquilidad. No queremos salir porque el tráfico en la Isla está convertido en una verdadera locura; parece que todos decidieron recorrer las mismas calles al mismo tiempo. Y pensar en ir a la playa, ni de broma; está llena de temporadistas que aprovechan las vacaciones y la celebración de la Virgen para abarrotar cada rincón de arena. Ya tendremos nuestro momento para disfrutar del mar con calma, sin apuros y sin multitudes, cuando la temporada baje y la Isla recupere su ritmo habitual. Por ahora, preferimos quedarnos en casa y aprovechar estos días para adelantar algunos pendientes que siempre están allí, esperando su turno. Este sábado, cuando nos levantamos mi esposo y yo, ya nuestro hijo había comenzado a darle la primera mano de pintura a la pared que se frizó la semana pasada. Son trabajos que queremos dejar listos antes de que llegue el fin de año, pequeñas metas que nos hemos propuesto cumplir paso a paso, sin presiones. Mayormente, nuestro hijo pasa parte del fin de semana paseando con su amiga, disfrutando su juventud y su tiempo libre, pero este sábado decidió dedicar parte de su mañana a apoyarnos. Siempre que puede nos ayuda, y no pierde oportunidad de recordarnos que es el menor de la casa, como si eso le diera una especie de responsabilidad especial que él mismo se ha impuesto.
While he was painting, my husband climbed up onto the roof to clear away the leaves that had fallen from the mango tree in the backyard, which has been more lush than usual lately. As for me, I stayed in one of my favorite spots in the house: the kitchen. That’s where I spoil them, where I prepare the foods we love, and where I feel like every little detail turns into an expression of love. Cooking for them is a way to pamper them, to be there for them, and to be present in our daily lives.
Mientras él pintaba, mi esposo subió al techo para quitar las hojas que caen de la mata de mangos del patio, que últimamente ha estado más frondosa de lo normal. Yo, por mi parte, me quedé en uno de mis lugares favoritos de la casa; la cocina. Allí es donde los consiento, donde preparo lo que nos gusta y donde siento que cada detalle se convierte en cariño. Cocinar para ellos es una manera de mimarlos, de acompañarlos, de estar presente en lo cotidiano.
Later that afternoon, our son went to his friend’s house, and my husband and I went out to pick up a few things so we wouldn’t have to go out on Sunday. We wanted to have everything ready so we could enjoy a quiet day without having to deal with traffic or crowds. We went to the Río market in Playa El Ángel because they sell a Dutch milk there that has become our favorite. We were surprised to find a fair, and the best part was that it was all dedicated to promoting domestic products. I loved that idea, because there are some really great products in this country—they just need a little push and some marketing so that more people can discover and appreciate them.
Ya en la tarde, nuestro hijo se marchó donde su amiga, y mi esposo y yo salimos a buscar algunas cosas para evitar salir el domingo. Queríamos tener todo listo para disfrutar un día tranquilo sin necesidad de enfrentar el tráfico ni las multitudes. Llegamos al mercado de Río, en Playa El Ángel, porque allí venden una leche holandesa que se ha convertido en nuestra preferida. Nos sorprendió encontrar una feria, y lo mejor es que todo estaba dedicado a promocionar productos nacionales. Esa idea me encantó, porque en el país hay productos muy buenos, solo les falta un poco de impulso y marketing para que más personas los conozcan y los valoren.
We bought what we were looking for and headed home, satisfied that we had everything we needed for a relaxing weekend. When we got home, we decided to wrap up our Saturday by watching a movie starring Morgan Freeman, one of our favorite actors. His presence on screen always captivates us and leaves us with the feeling that we made the right choice.
Compramos lo que buscábamos y nos marchamos rumbo a casa, con la satisfacción de tener todo lo necesario para pasar un fin de semana tranquilo. Al llegar, decidimos cerrar nuestro sábado viendo una película de Morgan Freeman, uno de nuestros actores favoritos. Su presencia en pantalla siempre nos atrapa y nos deja esa sensación de haber elegido bien.
