A Society That Forgot to Live

Health they say is wealth. Our health is so important in this world that when it fails, it would seem as if our whole world has crumbled before us. Most of what happens to us health-wise is largely caused by our actions: what we eat, what we drink, the kind of jobs we do, and also the hereditary nature of some of the ailments many of us inherit from our parents.
Overall, life can sometimes seem meaningless. It is just a rat race filled with repeated actions. Our society values profit and gain more than the quality of life of the people. If you particularly come to our own country here, you would see different fake drugs and even farm produce being sold, all in the name of making huge profits at the detriment of people’s health.
I was talking to a colleague of mine on the phone who asked me why she had not heard from me, and I told her about my daughter. When she started talking about her own experience too, I just did not know what to say anymore.
Imagine losing your aged father, and on the day of his burial, your sister dies. Then, about three weeks after the burial, another brother also dies. Most of the deaths were as a result of high blood pressure. I was even telling her that she should be prayerful, and she said this was not a matter of prayer, that it was in the blood. I reckon that they can actually manage it, but how can you do that when the family responsibilities will not even allow you to breathe?
And the medicines many people take to combat these conditions are sometimes fake, and they only add to the pain and sorrow.
Why are we killing ourselves all in the name of wanting to be rich at all costs? Why can’t we think about humanity first before anything else? Why is life like this, and why are we chasing after the wind?
It is just what it is. The bottom line is that we do not love one another because, if we did, we would not think about profit first before humanity. You will hear companies say, “If we don’t make a profit, how will we pay salaries?” And can you blame them? It is just what it is.
We all have a role to play in having a good quality of life, and it is everyone’s responsibility. This will start when we stop prioritising wealth over a good lifestyle.
Our lifestyle is also a determining factor. You will hear some people saying, “I have just one life to live, so I am going to enjoy it to the fullest, even if it costs me my health in the end.”
Should we all go back to time immemorial by cultivating what we eat and doing our best to make things work?
It is just sad that, as our population increases, so does our quality of life decrease. It is sad that life expectancy in our nation is around 60 years of age.
It is sad.
