The Illusion of Independence

Do we have anybody who can live their life all alone? I think that would be impossible unless such a person was never born in the first place!

Let’s take, for example, the day someone is born. There are people around who give you names, bathe you, feed you, and take care of you. Eventually, you grow up and become independent when you think you have become an adult. That’s why, at times, I laugh when some people say, “I can survive on my own,” or most of the time, “It was my effort that got me there.”

The truth is that no one is an embodiment of knowledge, and no one knows it all. You really can’t know everything, no matter how hard you try. We all, at some point, learn from another person. So, we shouldn’t become so proud and think we have figured out our lives to the point where we no longer need any help.

We also have to understand that there are different types of help someone can seek. We can talk about financial help, which most people often think is the alpha and omega. People think money is the only kind of help they can seek. Money is good, and when you have it, you can solve almost 80 percent of your problems because there is hardly anything you want to do in this life that does not require money. Almost nothing can be done without money, but money in itself cannot do anything if it is not used by a human being or sent on an errand.

We need to define the kind of help we need and the kind of help we are seeking. We can seek support from co-workers or family members in terms of advice or counsel on how to go about life or make certain decisions. Someone may even have money and still make a bad decision. So, we still need to count on people, and we shouldn’t forget that we all make mistakes. We should also be careful how we deal with people and never look down on anybody because you never can tell who may be of help to you tomorrow.

Don’t do evil, or should I say, minimise your evil? I said the latter because I believe that our intentions may be good, but we may end up hurting another person or their emotions and feelings.

Life is certainly a phase of a roller coaster, and we tend to say certain things when it seems life is favouring us. We can never be too careful. Life will happen to us whether we cause it directly or indirectly. We shouldn’t take everything too personally. Instead, we should always make informed decisions about life and about anything we choose to do.
