Doom Ported to Japan Only Console for Girls

If you have never heard of the Casio Loopy, don’t worry, you are not alone. I have heard of it but never saw any of its games in action. It is somewhat odd to say but the first game on the Casio Loopy I have seen running is a port of Doom. A fan has ported Doom to the obscure console with the help of others in the independent homebrew community.

Crawling Before Walking

The port of Doom we are talking about here is based on a Game Boy Advance port of Doom. Throaty Mumbo on YouTube credits [partlyhuman for creating a flashcart for the Casio Loopy]( https://github.com/partlyhuman/floopydrive). He also credits doomhack for their [GBADoom port](https://github.com/doomhack/GBADoom).

Ultimately, this port of Doom is impressive considering the age of the hardware. I know it is literally comparing apple (Pippin) and oranges with this comparison but…

The Loopy was released in 1995, a year later the Apple Pippin was released. The Pippin has a HORRIBLE track record with First-Person Shooters (FPS).

I just wanted to point that out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDe06uY5C40 The Port from Hell

Before we get into it too much, the 3DO, released in 1993/1994 runs a Doom port at near full screen resolution smoother than the Loopy does. This is purely a novelty having Doom on the Loopy for all intents and purposes.

The Casio Loopy does an admirable job at running Doom completely via the available hardware. Unlike the SNES version that is rougher and requires specialty chips to work.

Graphically, the Casio Loopy port, still a work in progress, is slightly better looking than the SNES version but not as smooth as that port or even the 3DO version.

Later in the video Throaty Mumbo shows off a much better, more fine tuned, version of Doom running on the Casio Loopy. Larger areas still have a problem with lack of detail – things become a muddy mess till you get close to them.

The speed increase alone is amazing. Check it out if you have the hardware to play. Definitely one of the weirder ports of Doom and leagues ahead of the current Neo Geo port.
