English Translation for Puyo Puyo on Sega Genesis Released

For most retro gaming fans, the name Puyo Puyo may not ring a bell as we never saw this game under that name in North America. Sure, later, we did get a combo pack including Tetris and Puyo Puyo but nothing for the older consoles such as the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis. That is unless you have played either Kirby’s Avalanche, on Super Nintendo, or Dr Robotniks Mean Bean Machine, on Sega Genesis. It was an interesting time back then, especially when anomalies like this happened.
The Original Without Any Fluff
There is something about being able to play the original version of a game minus the fluff that is usually added when porting to other regions. It might be political/social jokes such as what Working Designs did, or it might be removing things such as the upside-down crosses in Splatter House on the TurboGrafx-16.
Now, fans of the puzzle style of Puyo Puyo, myself being one, can enjoy the original game on Sega Genesis. I remember being horribly addicted to Dr Robotniks Mean Bean Machine and Kirby’s Avalanche over the years. With the recent [rise of some translations using AI]( https://read.twigether.com/insights/posts/2026-03-28-1s61pjs/) to others not being up to snuff for various reasons, it is nice to see a translation like Puyo Puyo. The translation here was apparently done from scratch and does not use the “official” arcade version translation at all.
If you are not familiar with Puyo Puyo, it is a puzzle game like Tetris, but you are fighting an opponent. You make matches, when you do a combo “trash” is sent to your opponent. This can ruin their chance at a combo themselves or even cost them the match. Like Tetris, the game ends when no more pieces can fit onscreen.
