Let’s Take a Look at Project Brutality a Doom Mod by a Fan

Doom is one of those games that PC gamers point at when stating PC gaming is better than consoles. I am going to be doing that a lot in one way or another in this article so buckle up. Because it is true. Project Brutality, I have somehow missed this fan mod over the years. I was a big vanilla Doom fan mainly downloading slight graphics improvements such as ZDoom and level packs. I never really messed with graphical total conversions and now I am wondering what the hell was wrong with me all these years.

Doom in a New, Brutal, Light

The original Doom did show a lot of gore onscreen but some of the more graphical stuff some of us remember was simply nostalgia playing tricks on our memories. Project Brutality, while not a remake of Doom, nor will it ever be according to those in the know, takes our imagination and makes it a reality.

This is brutal. I love it.

The levels are similar to the classic id Software maps we all know and love but they have been changed up. Similar to how ports to consoles would have to change things to make the game run well, except here, the developer made those changes to improve, or up the challenge level. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaidpO-x0Hw The Level of Detail Is Amazing

I know it may be blasphemy in most circles to make this comparison but, I get a serious Killing Time and Space Hulk on 3DO (and I guess the inferior version on PSOne and Sega Saturn). Bits and pieces of enemies hang out, they don’t just fade away. Blood splatters on the walls as well giving the game a bit of realism.

Little touches like that make all the differences in the world. The little things that make a good game into a great game attention to detail.

I am off to Google how to implement some of these graphics mods now. If I disappear, don’t bother sending a search party, Hell has probably consumed me.
