He’s young, he's adapting to English football, and Xabi Alonso has every right to make the decisions he believes are best for the team. What worries me is what could happen if frustration starts building. Chelsea clearly saw something special in Estêvão when they invested heavily in bringing him to Stamford Bridge. And from the glimpses we have had of him, it's easy to understand the excitement. There is confidence in his game. There is creativity as well. There is that Brazilian flair where he looks completely comfortable taking responsibility and trying something different. Players like that are not easy to find. And this is why Liverpool reportedly monitoring his situation makes me nervous. The thought of Estêvão eventually leaving Chelsea and becoming a star somewhere else would be painful enough. But if he does it in another Premier League shirt? Abeg, I don't even want to imagine it at all. 😭 Chelsea have spent years talking about building for the future. Estêvão is exactly the kind of player who should fit into that vision. Of course, not every highly-rated youngster becomes a superstar. Sometimes the club gets it wrong. Sometimes the player does not develop as expected. But I don't think we should reach that conclusion with Estêvão before we have really seen what he can become. And that's where Alonso has an interesting challenge. He does not have to force Estêvão into the team. He just needs to find a way of gradually bringing him into the picture and making him feel like part of the project. Because confidence matters too. A young player needs to believe that if he works hard enough, there is a place waiting for him. Personally, I'd rather see Chelsea be patient with Estêvão than make a decision we could regret for years. We have watched talented players leave clubs before and explode somewhere else. Let's not give ourselves another painful “what if?” story. Estêvão is only 19. There is still so much football ahead of him. I just hope some of that football is played in blue. 💙
