Order No. 38: A Bomb Headed for South Knot City | Death Stranding

Hello gamers, how are you all doing? I hope you're all doing great and getting plenty of gaming in this weekend! Continuing my adventure in Death Stranding and this time things took a turn that I genuinely did not see coming at all. Order No. 38, Emergency Provisions Delivery to South Knot City, starts off completely normally. Pick up nine containers of emergency supplies and head south to finally connect South Knot City to the Chiral Network. Simple enough on paper. But just before I set off, a guy from Bridges approaches Sam personally and hands over a special package addressed to Fragile herself, labeled as a Thermodynamic Weapon. Strange, but okay. I take it and get moving without overthinking it. That was a mistake.

A Very Long Journey From Lake Knot City to South Knot City

For this delivery I decided immediately to take the truck and commit to the full southern route without hesitating. After everything I've learned about managing cargo loads and long distance routes in this game, the truck has become my go-to for any mission involving bulk deliveries across significant terrain. And this one qualifies on both counts, nine containers of emergency provisions plus that mysterious special package, heading from Lake Knot City all the way down to South Knot City, which is about as far south as the map goes in this region.

Using the existing road infrastructure that the UCA has been gradually rebuilding across the central zone made the journey significantly more manageable than it would have been even a few episodes ago. Roads in Death Stranding change everything. What used to be careful terrain navigation across rocky ground and river crossings at five kilometers an hour becomes a smooth cruise that lets you actually breathe and take in the landscape rolling past the windows. Vehicles and roads together are what turn this game from a grueling slog into something genuinely enjoyable, and this particular trip reinforced that completely. The truck handled the long haul beautifully, and for a while it genuinely felt like one of the more relaxed deliveries I'd done in a while. That feeling would not last.

Observing the Ruins of South Knot City

As I approached the South Knot City area and started coming down through the surrounding landscape, the environment shifted into that distinctive ruined urban aesthetic that the game does so well. The remains of what was once a functioning city spread out across the terrain in all directions, collapsed structures, broken infrastructure, the ghost of a place that used to hold thousands of people. I've passed through this area before on other missions but there's something about approaching it this time with a full truck of emergency provisions, supplies meant to help the people still holding on inside, that makes the visual devastation land a little differently.

The ruins here feel lived in even in their destruction, if that makes any sense. You can see where repair attempts have been made and abandoned. You can see the layering of different disasters written into the landscape, the original Death Stranding damage and then the more recent terrorist attacks that South Knot City has been dealing with throughout the story. Coming in from the north and watching the city's outlines appear through the grey atmosphere while carrying a truck bed full of supplies for its residents is genuinely one of the more atmospheric approach sequences in the game so far.

Failed Delivery by MASSIVE EXPLOSION

And then I drove into the city perimeter. And then the package exploded. And then Sam died. Mission failed. Just like that.

The idea is to find out what really happens next. But that will be for a future article. See you in the next post gamers!
